    Downgrading Amarok 2 to 1.4

I finally managed to find a repository with Amarok 1.4

    Add to Adept Software Sources

    deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/bogdanb/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

    Add key

    sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com \
    0x1d7e9dd033e89ba781e32a24b9f1c432ae74ae63

Update sources, remove Amarok 2 and add 1.4

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get remove amarok
    sudo apt-get install amarok14

Works for me, as did 1.4, I've got no complaints; the Amarok 1.4/2 debate reminds me of the one about KDE 3.5/4.

It can't be an easy decision to make, that the only way to improve on something is to start all over again, but it's a brave one. I'm happy with Amarok 2, even at this early stage in its development, and am sure it will get even better over time.

The fact is, as has been proved in this post and several others, if people want to they can install and run 1.4 on their system. Now if you don't mind I'll get back to listening to music being played on my PC with Amarok 2.....

I am pissed off primarily because they seem to have dropped CD support and don't have any plans to reinstate it.

Yeah, I understand, it's a bit like MP3 player support but there again I was never able to connect to my MP3 player with 1.4 so it's not been a problem for me in 2 either!

Someone mentions CD support being available in 2.2 in the Comments section on this page but I don't know if this can be trusted:

Thank you VERY much tomp01. I can't tell you have happy this thread has made me. While I understand the Amarok teams reasoning, I feel that the new interface is a total disaster.

IMO, if you have all of these great options in an application and your next major revision COMPLETELY erases just about everything that people are expecting to be available, you're being pretty inconsiderate of your user base and the people that have helped the project gain the attention that it rightly deserved. Perhaps one day when the functionality is restored, I'll consider v2 again.

I think people should realize that it is not just one group making all the decisions that put Kubuntu users in the position of having Amarok 2 before it is complete. Amarok developers develop Amarok as time allows and people can adopt it when they think it is ready. Kubuntu developers decided that Amarok 2 was ready and included it in Kubuntu and removed Amarok 1.4.

I disagree. Amarok 2 is supposed to production ready. As I mentioned prior, the changes to the interface and the complete removal of functions that used to be available makes it a huge step back in the development cycle. In comparison, the options and functionality of v1.4 FAR surpass the current version. This was by design of the developers, not the Kubuntu team.

Re: Downgrading Amarok 2 to 1.4

As far as the development cycle is concerned when your development cycle leads to a new framework the implementation of features lags so sometimes forward in the development cycle is not forward in features. That is the situation with Amarok right now.

That does not mean that Amarok developers are responsible for Kubuntu's decision to include Amarok 2 in Kubuntu. It is still the responsibility of Kubuntu to evaluate the software they will include in their distribution and decide what to include. They did that. The result is Amarok 2 is in Jaunty. That is a decision by Kubuntu.

No problem, glad that I could help. I really do not understand why CD support was removed in the first place and I haven't heard a rational argument from anybody as to why that happened.

I disagree, in that I think that the Kubuntu devs in this case were entirely justified in switching to 2 since the Amarok devs themselves have entirely abandoned 1.4. Even really simple bugs haven't been fixed upstream (for example there's a two-line fix for the current problems 1.4 has with Wikipedia lookups), since the devs refuse to even touch 1.4 anymore.

This is not to say that 2 is at the level of 1.4; not even nearly. I use 1.4 to make playlists that I then click-drag into a Konqueror window with a folder on my UMS music player open (I've had 4 digital audio players ever and they've all been UMS...I'm too much of a fan of Linux and openness to get a player that wasn't stock USB mass storage compatible). With 2.1 you can't even do this. Seriously, what the hell is with that? You can't click-drag music out of the app into a file browser? That's alpha level polish. I could go on (and on and on) but the gist of it is that my day-to-day interaction with Amarok 1.4 just simply can't be done in 2.1, so while I'm happy that some people's way of using it leaves them perfectly content (more power to them), to me so far Amarok 2.1 is pretty but useless.

Huh -- well said, Keith. You just described my reason for happily using alsaplayer these days!
