    Google Earth for 9.04?

Has anyone else had any luck installing Google Earth under "Jaunty"? I've tried it from the medibuntu repository and from the CLI, with no luck whatsoever. The CLI install did finally install the executable, but there were no database files installed. All I could get was the GUI without the globe. No views of any kind. Looks like there may be some dependencies, but I did not see any errors during the install.
    AMD Athlon 64 4800x2 ; Biostar Tforce 550 ; 2gb ; dual-boot Kubuntu 8.04 & Kubuntu 9.04; Dual-boot XP & Vista.

simply install the google-earth-data package (when i installed it on mine it auto fetched the data package) hope that helps i'm on 9.04 and did a simple apt-get install google-earth to get it (although i think i made the menu entry cause it didn't)

      Re: Google Earth for 9.04?

It installed and runs correctly on my 64-bit desktop rig. It installed correctly on a 32-bit Dell Dimension 2350, but when I tried to run it I got the GUI only, like you report, followed by a video lockup. I attributed the lockup to the puny Intel 845G/GL graphics chip which can barely run glxgears at 230 fps.

Those are my only two data points with 9.04.

        Re: Google Earth for 9.04?

When I 1st installed it on Jaunty it used to crash whenever I launch it.

Downloaded the BIN file from Google's website:
        http://earth.google.com/intl/en/download-earth.html

        And executed the command

        Code:
        sh GoogleEarthLinux.bin
        It works just fine.

Before however I tried a different approach, am not sure if I simply got it from Ubuntu repos or something.
I have no idea why it didn't work before & suddenly worked out.

Anyways, the method mentioned here should create your menu items & everything.

P.S: After doing a fresh install of Jaunty, I copied some of the old Google Earth files that existed in my previous "/home " partition to restore the marks I had, it used to crash, even when I deleted them. Not sure if they created the problem in the 1st place, but I clicked the "uninstall" in Google Earth's directory & did a fresh install, that did it I guess.

I found out the answer for the speed issue in case anyone is interested.

On starting Google Earth select view and turn off atmosphere by unchecking it. It will run 10 times faster.

                At "The Liquidator"

I just did disable the atmosphere, I didn't experience any difference.
It's fast from the beginning, I guess it's a graphics card issue. (If you have a slow one I mean)

Intel Core 2 Due 3 GHz
                Nvidia 8800GT

The Liquidator, you've just reached 1000 posts!

Post another 24 & you'll reach the 10 bit resolution, lol.

Just to get me to 1001, I have an intel 915 graphics card and google earth really was a snail.

Disabling atmosphere really sped things up, obviously if things are fine, no probs.

Yep, noticed the landmark. Presumably that makes me an expert or the worlds worst noob

                        Re: Google Earth for 9.04?

oh since i have changed my sig my laptop is as followed...

dell latutide franken laptop (mostly a c840)

                        p4m@1.8
                        1gb ram
                        32 mb nvidia geforce4 440go ( using the nvidia 96 driver)
running kubuntu 9.04 (jaunty) w/ kde 4.3 beta2 using compiz

google earth runs really slow (would be faster if i disabled compiz a bit) but unlike dibl's report of missing elements on the 32 bit version i don't have those issues..
