More stuff missing - Disk and Filesystems setting vanished?

In addition to the buttons missing in the Display settings, it now seems like there is a whole section called Disk and Filesystems missing under the Advanced tab in System settings.

    Anyone seen it?

I did not really look for it until someone mentioned that it should be there (in an earlier version of Kubuntu). So I went looking for it and suddenly started to wonder where I could find more about partitioning etc. in Kubuntu? Seems like this part really is missing..

Let me know if you find it! :-)

    "Anyone seen it?"

--No, but we've seen a lot of posters looking for it!

I miss it. Not only that, but there is NO other facilities like it in 9.04 for accessing/managing your partitions. Unless you wish to Label your partitions and have them listed in Dolphin or Konqueror (in Konqueror, you have to go to File > Open > Places => there is no storage media). Or, mountmanager -- not the best option, but about all you have.

Major omission to the OS, imo.

Would be interesting to get some of the devs/packagers to chime in here and do some explaining. There might be "good" reasons why they have done what they have done, but in my opinion they are a bit like "Oooops! Forgot that part....".

Today I installed KDE on top of Ubuntu server. I am running the server on an older laptop (built in "UPS" ) and of course, there the missing buttons in Display settings turn up. So it is definitely a Kubuntu problem. And yes, it is an ATI card...

Another NICE!!!! thing is that as I have Samba server installed on it, there is a Samba module in the System settings to configure the server. Really great! Now I just need to get all versions in sync so the module can take control of my Samba server 8) And then we are only missing a few other server modules...

Re: More stuff missing - Disk and Filesystems setting vanished?

I wondered about this as earlier versions of Kubuntu had filesystem management in System Settings but if you use package manager to install GParted, the standard partition editor, you will have all the filesystem tools available again.

I can only assume that these tools have been taken out of system settings for whatever reason so now the partition editor is not part of the default installation. But as I said, explicitly install it & all filesystems tools are available but not from the system settings window.

Yeah.. a lot of things can be installed separately. But it does not make a good user experience, and formatting/partitioning should be part of the basic OS install. Another thing - it seems a bit strange to have it available in a standard KDE (and used by other distros), but not in Kubuntu...

Again - a word from the gentlemen up high would be nice.

I totally agree, what has probably happened is that in order to fit everything on a standard 700 Mb CD some items have had to be left off to accommodate (more important ?) software which has probably become rather more bloated.

I don't object to this in principle because as OSs advance, they will get bigger, fact of life. But it would be nice if the developers published a list of what is not now included by default so you know what to separately install.

Maybe the time has come to abandon the CD as being to small & issue future releases as DVD images ?

Or just make a metapackage so you can issue a command

                Code:
                sudo apt-get install missing-stuff-all

                  Hah!

...but not actually that bad of an idea, honestly, just something more "officially" named like "kubuntu-desktop-extras"....although I'd definitely be a fan of "kubuntu-desktop-all-the-stuff-we-wish-we-could-have-but-in-but-goddamn-cds-are-small"

Anybody ever hear official explanations about all the lost features in KDE 4?
I am relatively new to Linux, but quite experienced with DOS and Windows. I'm comfortable editing things like fstab, etc., but I need specific instructions of what files to edit and what to add.

My system is Kubuntu 10.10, using KDE 4.5.1.

This thread is a bit old now, but...

The real problem here was actually not KDE, it was that Kubuntu had decided to leave some parts out. So if you installed from a Ubuntu Server CD and then installed KDE desktop, you would get some more stuff than by installing Kubuntu.
