How do you configure 'recently used'?

I'm having trouble figuring out how to configure the 'recently used' tab in the klauncher. It's behavior is sporadic at best. The apps seem to be pretty well behaved but the documents are sometimes there, sometimes not. I'd like it to remember more than a couple but don't know where to set that.

    Anyone know?

    Thanks!

    klauncher ??

    man klauncher
    NAME
klauncher - daemon for service activation in KDE

    DESCRIPTION
!!! klauncher is started automatically by kdeinit. It is not supposed to be started manually. !!!

klauncher is a daemon responsible for service activation in KDE. It operates closely together with the kdeinit master process to start new processes. KDE applications communicate with klauncher via DCOP to start new applications or services.

The error message "KLauncher could not be reached via DCOP" either indicates a serious problem with the dcopserver or klauncher crashed.

Note: klauncher is not the "run command" dialog (Alt+F2)!

If you mean the Kickoff > Kickoff / KDE 4
KickOff is the new KDE application launcher, or "start menu"...
    ...
The Recently Used tab shows applications and documents that you have used before. From there it is easy to pick up the documents and applications you've worked with before.
I think that the Kickoff is using the Nepomuk > Nepomuk (&Strigi).
To enable the Nepomuk: System Settings > (Advanced) > Desktop Search > Enable Nepomuk Semantic Desktop.

Here the Nepomuk was non-functional before i installed the Sesame2 backend and added a symlink to the Java > Topic: Nepomuk&Strigi, enable and use / Part II

Now the Kickoff "Recently Used" is showing ten recent documents.

    If you mean the KRunner (Alt+F2) > KDE 4.2 / KRunner, > Tutorials-KRunner
KRunner, the "Run command..." dialog lets you quickly start applications, find documents or visit websites. KRunner has extended functionality through several new plugins, including spell checking, Konqueror browser history, power management control through PowerDevil, KDE Places, Recent Documents...
    ...
KRunner also has an alternative interface which is task-oriented. To use it, go to the configuration dialog using the wrench icon on the left of the KRunner dialog. Here you can configure what KRunner will match as you type. Under the "User Interface" tab, you can choose between command-oriented and task-oriented user interfaces. The task-oriented interface is named QuickSand...
If i start the KRunner (Alt+F2) and type "recent" there are the same ten documents as with the Kickoff (probably using the Nepomuk).

Re: How do you configure 'recently used'?

Hey! Thanks for those detailed explanations. I am referring to Kickoff and the Recently Used tab found therein. Sorry if that wasn't clear in my original post.

Before I posted this, I was getting 1 or 2 docs and 5 apps. Lately, I've been seeing 10 docs (the default?) and still 5 apps. This is acceptable if it continues. What I'd like to do is config. the number of apps/docs which is the setting I'm looking for and can't find.

I will play with Nepomuk/Strigi but I think that's much more functionality than I'm looking for. KRunner is very cool too. I have done the Alt-F2 before but never thought of typing 'recent'! Mine shows the 10 most recent documents there as well ... I guess it's working as designed but it would still be nice to find the config setting for the number of docs/apps.

      Thanks!!!

Yes, it would and it would be nice to get documentation for the users.

How the Kickoff "Recently Used" is working at here

        Applications

        - There are max 5 apps
        - It is "Recently Launched by the Kickoff"
Only applications that are launched through the Kickoff are counted.
If the the application is lauched through the Lancelot, KRunner, Quicklauncher...
        it is not counted.
        - There is a "Clear Recent Applications" when right clicking an application at the "Recently Used"

        Documents

        - There are max 10 docs
        - There seems to be a bug ( or maybe: It's Not a Bug, It's a Feature )
The "Resently Used Documents" is not updating the list if there are ten documents
at the list. When opening a new document an old document is removed from the
list but the new one is not added to the list. The "Resently Used Documents" list
is updated when you log out&in.
        - There is a "Clear Recent Documents" when right clicking a document at the "Recently Used"
        Before you edit, BACKUP !

Excellent. Where did you find this documentation by the way? Sorry if I didn't do my due diligence in trying to locate it ... Or did you just create it?

Anyway, from what I've seen so far, this seems correct. And I see that you're thinking there is a bug too ... I have noticed some strange behavior (as described in my previous post) but as of this moment, I'm getting 10 recently used documents as designed.

Perhaps there is no easy way to change this config in KDE 4.X without changing code or editing config files by hand. I believe KDE 3.X had the ability via GUI ...

Oh well, I'm still digging KDE 4.X and will continue to be a faithful user.

          Thanks again!
