kde applications laggy, X running hot

Ever since upgrading to 9.04 last weekend, all the kde applications (konqueror, konsole, kmail) are laggy, slow to respond to keyboard or mouse events like typing or dragging the scrollbar. alt-tab switching between applications or switching desktops are also laggy. Interestingly, firefox doesn't seem to be affected.

Top shows the X server running between 25% and 50% of cpu, even when the box isn't doing anything except redrawing the screen for top.

PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND
    3446 root 20 0 352m 150m 8080 R 31.4 10.0 3:11.24 Xorg
    4050 kgoess 20 0 65312 20m 15m S 1.3 1.4 0:14.18 kwin
    4055 kgoess 20 0 281m 45m 22m S 0.6 3.0 0:13.07 plasma
    4088 kgoess 20 0 137m 33m 17m R 0.6 2.2 0:06.36 konsole
    5000 kgoess 20 0 2448 1200 912 R 0.6 0.1 0:00.09 top
    1 root 20 0 3084 1884 564 S 0.0 0.1 0:01.24 init

stracing the Xorg process locks up the whole box, forcing a power-button reboot.

I've tweaked all the X settings I can find, and none of them seem to make any difference.

Any suggestions? Anything you could add would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

I can't help but I do have the same problem, along with random freezes (see http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3103329.0), and a dead wireless connection (see http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...8438#msg178438).

Well, except for trying to strace X I haven't seen any system freezes. I haven't gotten around to trying to get the wireless up yet, I was hoping that would just work

Since this is a laptop, having X running like it is drains the battery in about ten minutes, which is also a bummer.

Aha, I think I got it:

        Section "Device"
        Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"

Wow, I can exit vi in less than two seconds now! I can switch tabs in konsole in less than five! I can browse slashdot in konqueror! Woot!
