    Re: Heavy freeze-up problem

    You are not alone

Using firefox for a while (20 min) administrating my joomla sites I have to reboot.

    I don't have this problem in 8.10 ->kde4.2.

So I am still using jaunty as a test environment.
Although it is initially much faster (QT4.5) than 8.10 it slows down quick. >

I guess it is a video card issue (ATI) and hope they get this fixed soon.

              Re: Heavy freeze-up problem

download from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source.../+build/949551 in that page choose and download (right side in the page with blue caracther) the linux-headers-2.6.27-14_2.6.27-14.33_all.deb
              linux-headers-2.6.27-14-generic_2.6.27-14.33_i386.deb
              linux-image-2.6.27-14-generic_2.6.27-14.33_i386.deb
moved all that file that you download in your home directory
open terminal and install with this command: sudo dpkg -i linux-*
when installing they will ask you to keep the configuration in kernel choose the first one (that you install the new kernel), boot it, in grub you will see the old kernel choose it, and the freeze problem will disapear

Thank you. That did not work fopr me.
I get a busybox error when booting with the "new" old kernel.

I'll have to look into that when I have the time.

if that kernel not work for you, you can choose that work for you (but you must remember what kernel you have when in intrepid that function with your system) and you can install from it, ciao ciao

                    Re: Heavy freeze-up problem

Add me to the list of random freezes. Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, shipped with factory-installed Ubuntu 7.10 a year ago. I really wanted to switch to Kubuntu 9.04 after playing around with the Alpha & Beta releases. Fresh install from CD image, which I checked with md5sum before using. I get a random freeze-up about once a day, with nothing working except the mouse pointer. Requires a hardware reboot. Seems to occur when I select something with the mouse left button. I tried turning off the desktop effects as mentioned above, to no avail. This never happened with the Alpha & Beta releases, which I was running from a USB flashdrive. Has anyone else had success with the kernel change?

                      Re: Heavy freeze-up problem

And another one... I have a Thinkpad T60p with ATI graphics card... just upgraded to 9.04 only to find that the card is no longer supported... that sucks... I have to use open source driver... The problem did not occur until I switched on desktop effects and tried 'OpenGL'. Then it freezes fairly quickly when ever I open a window.

The main problem now is that I can not even open the System Settings to switch off desktop effects! So my KDE freezes right on startup.

Can anyone tell me how to switch off desktop effects from the command line or in some config file? Right now I'm using IceWM as a backup...

Oh, and does anyone know how to easily revert back to 8.10? Previously I had 8.10+KDE4.2 which was really nice, until I had some Kernel problem and the system would crash on startup. So I upgraded to 9.04 which fixed that problem, but now this...

Alt+Shift+F12 is the default hotkey to toggle compositing

                          Re: Heavy freeze-up problem

I've just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on an old machine.

                          -------
                          Intel Pentium 3 1Ghz.
                          Ram 512 MB
                          VGA Nvidia MX440
                          -------

Quite old machine I know, but it should run Ubuntu quite well, it's somewhat slow & crashed few times with almost the exact symptoms as my newer laptop (mentioned back in this post), only here even mouse froze (Note that am using Nvidia's driver & have even turned off the effects).

We have a serious issue here, I tried installing 8.04 on this machine before but it didn't have the Ethernet driver (I think it's a 3com PCI), but worked with 9.04 .. now am switching to 8.10.

Note: The live cd of the 9.04 was running for more than a day without freeze, also it seems that it runs from the CD faster than when being installed. The 8.10 live was faster than 9.04 installed.

If I face some problems with 8.10 installation I'll post here so we know it's not the computer it's self, rather than 9.04.

On Laptops the ACPI (power management) can do lots of issues. Try either turning it off to when booting next time into the system or/and also modifying its settings. See on some machines hard drive power management is not supported but if used by the system to address, could can even lead to premature hardware failure.

I'm triple booting on a 6 year old Pentium 4 desktop (XP, Win7, Kubuntu). No problems with any other version of Kubuntu. This was a fresh install. System freezes when using the add/Remove packages app. I've read that this is a problem so I'm hoping a change to an alternate package manager will clear up the problem. If I just left the system up and running I might get the freeze then but since I'm trying to download some apps, it seems to freeze at that point. By the way, the current package manager sucks big time. One of the things that is being used to sell Linux is the package management. What is being foisted off on us in Jaunty is an embarrassment.

First thing to do is open a Konsole window and run
                                Code:
                                top

Then, with the "top" window kept visible, run the "Add/Remove" or "KpackagKit" or whatever you are running that seems to cause a freeze. See which process top indicates is using the CPU resources -- that should indicate what is causing the issue, and maybe point toward a workaround.
