    Icons on the desktop??

How do you get icons on the desktop?? I have gone into the home folder and added link to device on the desktop icon and while I can see it in Dolphin file manager under /home/me/desktop there is nothing on my desktop??

Sorry if this sounds a bit dumb but I think it is a case of can't see the wood for the trees

Drag&drop the icon from the /desktop directory to the plasma desktop.

With the KDE 4 the /Desktop directory is an ordinary directory with a hidden .directory file.

    .directory file
Contains the folder viewing settings for a directory in KDE (the K Desktop Environment); includes settings such as icon positions and view mode (icon, list, etc.); automatically created when the view settings of a folder are modified; hidden by default.
If you drag&drop an icon (.desktop file) from a directory to the plasma desktop the information is added to the ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc. This adds the icon functionality to the plasma desktop.

Unless I misunderstand you, It sounds like what you really wanted to do was:

      1. Right click the Desktop/Folder View widget on your desktop.
      2. Choose "Folder View Settings"
      3. Select "Specify a folder" and point it to the device mount-point.

If it just package icons that you want to put on the Desktop, to launch your commonly-used packages, then you can:

        1. Right-click the cashew in the upper-right corner and choose "unlock widgets".

        2. Kmenu>{to your favorite package}, for example Kmenu>System>Konsole, and right-click on the Terminal/Konsole, and choose "Add to Desktop".

        3. Right-click the cashew and choose "Lock Widgets".

Thanks guys, 3vi1 hit the nail on the head, I had to change to folder view, once I done that I could add as I needed.

          Thanks
