    64-bit help [SOLVED]

Well, I took the plunge and converted my long-standing Kubuntu to 64-bit. It was a fairly painless process. I ran the installer, selected to format my root (/) partition as ext4, and selected my current /home partition to remain as /home and remain as ext3 (since setting it to ext4 would have forced a format of the partition).

As a result, everything in my root partition was wiped out and reinstalled but all my program settings and stuff in /home were left intact. I've since had to reinstall a bunch of third party programs, but once they're installed again they pick up all the settings from my /home partition and things are peachy.

But there is one main problem. I converted to 64-bit in order to access all 4 gigs of ram. However, it's still showing as 2.8 gigs. I've read I may need to recompile the kernel. Any ideas before I look more into that?

    No, that's baloney.

But, there may be an issue with your BIOS recognizing all of your memory. Did you recently install new memory? What does BIOS show? Linux OS takes its cues from BIOS, basically, so that's where the issue probably is. Did you make a 64-bit Live CD? If you boot it, it should show about 3.7G, which is 4G /1024M /1024K / 1024 bytes.

Thanks dibl, you were right about the bios. I enabled memory remapping and now I have all my ram showing up. I really like 64-bit so far and Jaunty is looking great.
