    Kubuntu 9.04 beta frezze

Ok, i have problem with randomly freeze in kubuntu 9.04 beta while using desktop effects, and only thing i can do is to restart PC by force. Without them everything works fine. In Alpha 6 with kernel 2.6.28-11 also worked fine, but with kernel 2.6.28-11 i heaved the same problems.
I have Ati radeon X1600xt graphic card and AMD Athlon 3600+ X2 64bit processor. Also i'm using open source drivers. Any advice?

This wasn't listed in the kubuntu release notes, but perhaps it is affecting us as well...

"A bug in an Ubuntu-specific patch to X server logging code will cause X sessions to crash after they have been running for longer than a day. Users encountering this bug should upgrade to the latest version of the xserver-xorg-core package, which will be available immediately after the beta release. 328035. "

My system is up to date, and the problem stays... Because of the complete freeze i don't have any report about what is going wrong. Also in Live session when i turned on the effects it comes to freeze.

Well a freeze like that smells like a graphics issue... I would try the proprietary ATI driver, if you are not opposed to it.

I also think it's a graphic bug. But i don't want to install property drivers, i have bad memory's with them... But it's interesting how it worked with older kernel...

I am having the same problem, the system just locks solid requiring a cold reboot, as this is the first version of kubuntu I have installed on this laptop I can't comment on previous alpha\beta versions of 9.04.

My laptop also has an ATI video X600 Mobility, I can't say what drivers I am using as this is my first real play with KDE4 and Kubuntu so I am trying to find where things live.

This is strange. Most of the freezes come when i try to run new conservation in Kopete, and one time it's freezes when i try to run ktorrent. But when i do some other things everything is ok.

Well it has got to the point where the system is un-userable, the freezes seem to happen when you have clicked on something, it could be a a whole new window opening it could be a sub window opening, it just randomly freezes. It the same windows or programs but sometimes upon rebooting the laptop trying to open the same windows again will result in the same lock then other times it won't.

There are two types of freezes, there the one that turns the screen a very dark grey colour (not black as in turned off), there no mouse showing, no keyboard, the lights are on but no disk activity. Then there the freeze where the screen stays on display, there no mouse, no keyboard and again no disk activity. I had one freeze where the desktop stayed in view but faded (like you get with some OS's when you get the shutdown option box up) but it faded a lot further and then started to change colour going to blue and then red. In all case its a complete hard reboot with the power button.

Not sure where to go from here, it is certainly not a hardware problem as I can boot into another OS on the laptop and that performs perfectly.

It seams we both have same problem. What graphic card do you have? What drivers do you use?
I report bug on launchpad:https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ce/+bug/350319. Feel free to conform bug and explain your case. It will help to fix this problem.

When you boot, can you open a Konsole window and run "top"? Leave it running -- it will show the running processes at the time of the "freeze".

Also, does the Alt-SysRq RSEIUB routine restart it, when it is frozen?

                      Re: Kubuntu 9.04 beta frezze

You mean that i should see which process uses CPU (100%)? I can't see which process causes it because console freezes to. And after restart it not give me any crash report, which is problem.
You mean like <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Backspace>? No it must be restart using restart button on computer.

OK booted up open kosole and started top.

Then went into system setup (which had open from being open in a previous session when it crashed), clicked on Network, clicked on network management clicked on the wireless tab, highlighted my connection, clicked on edit the the system froze with the fading desktop as describe before. Top was showing 7% Xorg as the highest process running.

I have done this a few times now and I seem to be able to reproduce the error (freeze) doing this, although open program windows have also produced a system freeze.

My video is An ATI X600 Mobility (am using a Acer Laptop), I never selected any driver for my card, I am just running on what Kubuntu setup for me. But looking at the output of lsmod I think it is the radeon driver and lspci -v show it using radeonfb.

I have also checked the xorg log file but there nothing listed as an error in there.

As for "Also, does the Alt-SysRq RSEIUB routine restart it, when it is frozen?" You will have to teach me that one..

I don't really want to get involved with kubuntu and resolving the problem ( ihave another distro as my main OS), I just installed a KDE 4 enabled distro to check out a couple of programs, all I have managed to do in two days in ensure they are both installed and I can open them, trying to get one of the above programs installed and this freezing problem has taken most of my time. Sorry if that sounds a bit harsh, just feeling a bit peeved.

OK were one step further on, I checked out the bug link raven posted and I noticed that he mention desktop effects. I remember seeing that listed that on my system and when I checked it was enabled. So I have now disabled it and we are a little more stable but I am still getting freezes

I checked out the link and have to admit I had never heard of it, least of all raising elephants !!

                              hi.
i am having the freeze & not being able to reboot while trying to use kopete + amarok (+ firefox or vlc sometimes)
running "top" it say that amarok was eating the RAM just by sitting there on the systray.
i tried to use kopete and firefox, freeze
                              kopete and amarok, freeze
firefox and vlc or amarok, freeze

it could be related to the sound? because x looks like never before. while using intrepid i had all the time like a delay with the image while changing desktop or active window and the image was like the rain in tv but with colors. now that doesn't happens, just the freeze.
(it makes sense what i tried to explain? if not, i'll get retalin and try again LOL)
