    Annoyance in Kmenu

Is it just me, or does anyone else find the labelling of items in the Kmenu annoying?

What is the point of having the category of application in big letters while the actual name of the application is in light grey and smaller letters?

I would like to just switch the two. When I look for Firefox, I do not care if it is a webbrowser. I just want to find Firefox. It would be ok to have Web browser in smaller, light grey, letters under. But the main caption should be Firefox!

Anyone know how to switch? And what the logic behind it is in the first place?

I suspect you could use the menu editor and change the name and description. I am still in the mode of using KDE4 pretty much as installed to try to find the benefit of the developers reasoning. It is not always obvious.

That is why I would love to hear the reason behind the choice in the menu.

That is likely because for a user not familiar with the apps, a name like dolphin doesn't say much of what the program actually does, File Manager OTOH is easily understood.

In KDE3 you could easily change how apps were presented (name-description, description-name, description only etc.), and I'm pretty sure someone will add the functionality back eventually...I do see Description-Name as a reasonable default, though.

On this I disagree with you :-) As there is a description, it is logical to look at Amarok first, think "What is this?" "Ah, description say it is a mediaplayer". This is something you only do once or twice. You are not a newcomer for ever, so after trying it out, you know what it is and only need to find Amarok, not one of several mediaplayers. It is like using training wheels on your bike when you know how to bicycle, just because you needed it the first day.

If you prefer Name-Description, you can try/use Lancelot (alternative menu plasma-widget), it lists favorites as Description-Name, but the application menus are listed as Name-Description.

On this I disagree with you :-)
Feel free to do so, your opinion is just as valid as mine

              Re: Annoyance in Kmenu

I tried Lancelot and in some ways it is a step in the right direction, but it just feels more cluttered. All I wanted was to be able to more easily spot the application I need.

This is one for all you CLI experts out there:

Isn't there a config file for the Kmenu where you can add an argument to switch this? :-)

Don't think the functionality is there yet, though I do believe it may be in the near future

                  Re: Annoyance in Kmenu

I heard from another developer that the code for it is already in there somewhere, so I guess it only needs a frontend. So I think you are very right on this! :-)
