Password manager - Linux and MS Win

I have long felt the need to store my passwords in a little more organized way than just a bunch of textfiles.

Among other things I work with websites, and as I do not like short or easy passwords, I need to store them somewhere to remember them. So in MS Win, I have started to use KeePass. It is open source, there is a Linux version and I was hoping that would do the trick.

But after installing Kubuntu, I realise Kubuntu has it's own password manager - the Wallet. So my question is how to integrate the two? For me, it is not enough to export/import. I need to use this all the time and add to it all the time.

How do you solve this? Any suggestions? Is there another tool, maybe, that integrates better with Wallet? I need to have it available on MS Win and I have to be able to carry the database with me on a memory stick.

Edit: When I search for KeePass in KpackageKit, I only get an older version. There is a 0.4 version out of KeePassx and I would like to install it. Any solution other than downloading it from their site?

After looking through their site, I found a file especially for Jaunty, so I took a chance and downloaded that one. It installed just fine and KeePassx is running fine. Now I just need to find out how to open my database from MS Win

      No can do :-(

My MS Win database is ver. 2.x and KeePassx does not support that.

But after having a little message exchange with the developer of KeePass, it turns out that KeePass 2.x will run on Linux if you have Mono 2.2 or greater. Not my lucky day. Kubuntu only supports Mono 2.01 and it will take some time to get to 2.2 . So no matter how I go about it, I can not win.

Well - I think I will just wait for the next Mono release to come to Kubuntu. It will be worth the wait. KeePass is one sweet app!

I use keepassx (0.4) on jaunty and keepass (1.14) on windows, they share databases just fine.

There must be many people wanting to know how to manage their large collections of passwords for various forums, websites, bank accounts and everything else that is done online.

I have a simpler solution. I have encrpted home partition, which Kubuntu does on installation with the alternate CD, and simply use Firefox and Thunderbird to remember every password that I need, which I forget. Of course, I backup the .mozilla and .mozilla-thunderbird directories onto an encrypted external hard disk. This means when upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid or Intrepid to Jaunty, it is easy to copy the needed files from backup and all the passwords work. Also I have two distro's - Debian and Kubuntu, so it's easy to copy passwords from one to the other using .mozilla and .mozilla-thunderbird directories.

Using Wallet is another possibility and there are probably others. I do not use MS at all, so can't help with that, sorry.

keepassx works great for me, and it works on any platform. Couple that with dropbox (https://www.getdropbox.com/home) and you can share your password database securely on any computers you use. Here's an article describing the setup. It's very simple:

            http://www.lifehacker.com.au/tips/20..._syncer-2.html

I use this setup on 5 different computers that I use, and it gives instant access to all my passwords, no matter where I originally saved it from.

Yeah, I know about those solutions. Here is the problem:

I have already set up things in KeePass 2 and the database is of course accordingly. Keepassx does not work with that database and will not do for the forseeable future.

My best bet is to get Mono 2.2 working on 9.04 as this will allow me to runn KeePass 2 and of course share the database between MS Win and Kubuntu. Apart from that, I do not need Dropbox as I have several domains and can use my own ftp for sharing. But thank you very much for the tip! :-)

I will open a separate thread about Mono 2.2 to check if anyone has dared try it on 9.04 yet.

I wanted to get away from the encrypted textfiles etc. and over on a solution that could even be portable. KeePass is very close to that solution.

Re: Password manager - Linux and MS Win

Is there any way to export your database in a format that keepassx will like?

The nice thing about Dropbox is that you never need to download a saved file (from an ftp site or wherever). It automatically updates your local copy if any changes have been made. The other nice thing is that each computer you use it on will have a local copy of the file (not just a networked file) so if you're ever not able to go online you still can access your database without any problems.

                Good luck to you!

Re: Password manager - Linux and MS Win

Could be. But I will manage as well as possible for now. As there is a chance to get KeePass 2 running, I prefer that over going backwards to an earlier version of the database with less features. I really like KeePass 2 and hope to continue to use it.

Now I need to find out how to be able to install Mono 2.2 in 9.04 as it I can not find it in the repos.

BUT - I am not sure if I have all the repos added.

A good thing in KpackageKit would be to have a simple mechanism where you could choose what repos you wanted to add and to add new ones that are not in the normal list.

A great site to check third-party repositories is https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas

From there it looks like no one has mono 2.2 yet. The most promising repo seems to be this one: https://launchpad.net/~mono-testing/+archive/ppa

In kpackagekit you can add third-party repositories and their pgp keys. You go to the Settings section and edit the repositories and then there is a tab to add third-party repos and another tab to add their security keys which you can download from the specific ppa pages.
