I had all sorts of sound card hassle at home with jaunty at first. Then recompiled alsamixer and then reinstalled kmix and it was fine and dandy

        Re: Kmix won't open.

I'm using SB Audigy 2 card.
I have installed a number of multimedia packages in an effort to remedy the issue including alsa mixer but still no fix.
I take it that Alsa is standard on kde. Is it ok to mix alsa with pluseaudio?

Open the Konsole, and Run kmix from there, does it report any error messages?

K Menu -> type "konsole" -> type "kmix".

Please understand that I'm a newbie to linux. I think I did this right.

              Re: Kmix won't open.

Don't type kdesudo, just "kmix" by itself.

              Code:
              george@kgeorge-desktop:~$ kmix
You shouldn't have to run kmix with "Administrative Priviledges" (a.k.a. kdesudo).

Also, some programs can behave unexpectedly by running it via 'kdesudo'.

OK. Sudo kmix opens the mixer. Curious why it doesn't work from the application launcher, but, at least it works!
                Thanks

Kmix is a "user space" application, and you are adjusting it in root mode -- that's a no-no. You will change the permissions on it and lock out all users.

I didn't know that. Point taken.
Actually, upon further review, the only way it has ever opened is with sudo kmix; & that's after opening something else first. Typing in konsole in the open terminal for example then typing sudo kmix (kmix won't do it).

                        Re: Kmix won't open.

if it helps when I had the trouble that I had with it , when I tried to open it from the k launcher menu the icon would start bouncing away and then it would appear in the panel and then nothing at all.

It might benefit from a reinstall

after you uninstall it via konsole via typing

                        sudo apt-get remove kmix

Next I reinstalled using a .deb file from launchpad

( I pasted this link in an internet browser which you can do by pasting this in your browse

                        http://launchpadlibrarian.net/225558...untu2_i386.deb

which downloaded the files needed and then I right clicked on the icon and selected install via gdebi installer. Did this and it worked a treat. Do not know why. Should work from KMENU but does not however this is alpha software I guess

Anyway give it a try if you wish and see if it makes any difference. Let me know how you get on as it worked for me and has been fine and dandy since

                          george@kgeorge-desktop:~$

                          OPENS!

                          So, here are the results;
Open Kmix from Application Launcher - fails.
                          From Konsole (terminal);
                          kmix - fails.
                          sudo kmix - fails
                          konsole - opens
                          sudo kmix - opens

The procedure that works is to open Konsole (terminal), type in any application (in this case konsole) & open that; then type in sudo kmix & kmix will open. I've tried just kmix after launching konsole in the above example & it fails without the prefix sudo.

This isn't a big deal. My overall volume was noticeably lower than normal & I hadn't tried to adjust it since installing alpha 5. Now that I've been able to open it & make some adjustments, I probably won't open it again for quit some time. It's just a minor thing that needs fixing.

I had the same problem. Konsole method did not work.
The method described by andybleaden worked for me.

                            Kmix is operational now again.
