    Kind of new

Hey everyone, im new to these forums, and kind of new to Kubuntu. Its the only version of linux ive ever used, except for a brief period on ubuntu. I used it for a class assignment a couple years ago when 6.04 was just coming out. I am very impressed on how far KDE has come, and i am very much enjoying 9.04.

I do have a couple of complaints, however.

I'd like to be able to set the taskbar to take up the entire bottom of the screen, as im running my screen res at 1680x1050, right now after resizing the bar only takes up 3/4 of the bottom.

When i began using ktorrent, it worked very smoothly and i was very impressed with how lightweight and fast it is. Just today, when i began opening it, it told me my file was already being downloaded, and then it crashed, every time. I tried using Utorrent, but then wine freaked out and began opening a couple hundred windows in an attempt to crash my computer, it looks like i can click faster than it though... I closed wine and it stopped.

I am very into desktop tweaking, so i'd like some help on using conky and other programs similar to it.

I am also into security, i'd like to have a firewall that i can setup good rulesets with.

And lastly, can anyone help me with ICMP chatting? i downloaded it to test out with some of my tech class friends but i cannot find any help on it anywhere ive been so far.

I know these arent exactly OS issues, but seeing as how im on 9.04 this seemed like the best place for this to go.

Thanks in advance for anyone that helps.

First, Welcome to KFN. Second, you sure picked a fine Kubuntu release to reintroduce yourself to. By that, I mean, Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 is Alpha - it's in development stage. It's going to go through growing pains - and so will you - as pieces and parts break at times.

Are you sure you want to put yourself through this?

Thanks, im also running 8.10, mainly using this one to see what changes there are, but i am enjoying it, and im hardly finding any issues for it being an alpha, and yes, i knew the risks when i downloaded it.

Have you tried > Plasma FAQ and there "How can I change the height and the size of the panel?"

Searching Kubuntu forums > Search "Conky" (conky weather, Conky Transparency, KDE 4.2 & Conky...) maybe these topics help.

        > IPTables HowTo (Ubuntu community)
        Basic iptables howto

Iptables is a firewall, installed by default on all official Ubuntu distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu). When you install Ubuntu, iptables is there, but it allows all traffic by default. Ubuntu 8.04 Comes with ufw - program for managing a netfilter firewall
guarddog- firewall configuration utility for KDE
Guarddog is a firewall configuration utility for KDE. It is aimed at two
groups of users: novice to intermediate users who are not experts in TCP/IP
networking and security, and those users who don't want the hassle of
dealing with cryptic shell scripts and ipchains/iptables parameters.
firestarter - gtk program for managing and observing your firewall
Firestarter is a complete firewall tool for Linux machines. It
features an easy to use firewall wizard to quickly create a
firewall. Using the program you can then open and close ports
with a few clicks, or stealth your machine giving access only
to a select few. The real-time hit monitor shows attackers
        probing your machine.
ufw - program for managing a netfilter firewall
Ufw is a tool to manage a local host-based firewall. It provides a command line interface and aims to be uncomplicated and easy to use.
gufw - graphical user interface for ufw
gufw is an easy and intuitive way to manage your Linux firewall. It supports common tasks such as allowing or blocking pre-configured, common p2p, or individual port(s), and many others!
arno-iptables-firewall. Single- and multi-homed firewall script with DSL/ADSL support
Unlike other lean iptables frontends in Debian, arno-iptables-firewall will setup and load a secure, restrictive firewall by just asking a few question. This includes configuring internal networks for internet access via NAT and potential network services (e.g. http or ssh).
        ++ many more
