try using ctrl-alt-f1 or similar to get to a terminal, ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to 'normal'

Nope that hasn't worked for me for about 6 weeks! ctl alt + f1, or f7 is pooched for me, but then so is KDE4 for me as well.

Turns out that ctl + alt + backspace has been deactivated by the devs to get it back add this to your xorg.conf

          Code:
          Section "ServerFlags"
              Option "DontZap" "no"
          EndSection

            Known Issues:
            ...
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is now disabled, to reduce issues experienced by users who accidentally trigger the key combo. Users who do want this function can enable it via the DontZap option in xorg.conf. A GUI tool to simplify setting xorg.conf options is under development and will be available in a later Alpha release.
