How Do I Fix Error: "Cannot Connect to X Server :0.0"?

I did a fresh installation of Jaunty on an AMD64 system with an NVIDIA 6-series video card. I had problems with configuring the driver, but I was able to do a clean install of the latest 185.x version. Most things work just fine, but on some programs, like LyX, I get the error: cannot connect to X server :0.0.

What's up? How can I fix this?

Odd ... this sort of thing usually happens on remote connections, or if you sudo into a different user. Are you launching lyx from the command line or the menu?

would probably fix this, but what exactly are you doing? Which programs fail? Can you send the exact output?
