Wireless passphrase

Toshiba Satellite with Atheros 242 card sees my router with good signal strength
but does not accept passphrase. I have also tried the hex key.

PCLOS and Mint (Ubuntu) both work fine.

Anything I can try without going too deeply into command line?

Three questions, that might help us to answer your question.

1. Which version of Kubuntu are you using? 9.04, 9.10 or something else?

2. Are you using network-manager, wicd, or something else to manage the connection?

3. What type of encryption does you router use: WEP, WPA, WPA2, ...?

1. 9.04 with KDE 4.3.2 update.

2. Network Manager (the icon that appears top right of desktop.

3. WEP 128 bit.

I highly recommend switching to WICD for your network manager. The kubuntu provided Network Manager sucks chickens.

If you have some way to hardwire yourself into an internet connection temporarily, this should be as quick and easy as either doing it through your package manager of choice, or a "sudo apt-get install wicd" from the command line.

If you're limited to wireless connection, but you have another computer you can download the package/s on, try a simulated install:

sudo apt-get --simulate install wicd

and make note of any packages it wants to install along side before you go and download the packages on another system to transfer over via USB flash drive or another method.

I have connected to a hardwired internet connection but cannot find WICD in the KDE software manager,
and in terminal get 'Couldn't find package wicd'.

Do you have the universe repository enabled? That's where wicd is:

I managed to locate wicd but when I try to install it says I have to remove all network-manager-kde
files. I cannot locate any network-manager-kde files.

Your package manager should handle the removal of those old packages for you when it does the install of WICD.

Full speed ahead and you should be happily surfing wirelessly soon!

DK is absolutely correct.

If the network manager was not removed when you install wicd you would without doubt get conflicts. So don't worry about the removal of the conflicting packages.

When I try to install wicd, I keep getting an error. would this be because I am connected to a network right now?

Shouldn't be, I was able to uninstall the kubuntu Network Manager and install wicd while on the wifi without any trouble.

Could you copy and paste your error message for us?
