blame java? blame firefox? blame weebly? can't understand this!

    Here's the problem.

I have weebly websites that I need to edit now and then.
I have been able to view the sites but not been able to access them for editing for a few weeks lately - because I'm in China and weebly were having issues with the firewall there (blocked for a while). Got a message from them today that the issues are resolved and I should now be able to access my sites.

However, Firefox still won't access the editing part of the site. The strange thing is that when I click to go to edit, the browser address bar shows the correct destination, but the info at the bottom of the browser window tells me it's trying to connect to something called "static.ak.connect.facebook.com"

Facebook is a complete no go area in China right now, so the server just times out or the connection gets interrupted - presumably by the firewall. But why is browser pointing there in the first place? Has facebook hijacked the browser somehow?

I did some googling and saw that this 'static.connect.ak..... thing could be something wrong with the java extension or plugin in firefox - and I saw that a LOT of people are having issues with firefox and facebook. But I tried disabling the java in firefox to absolutely no effect. Cleared my cache etc also to no effect.

The interesting thing for me is that I CAN access the weebly editing page in the Konqueror browser. However, since Konqueror is not supported for weebly, this is of very limited use, though it means I can publish a site.

Checked for updates to my java and there are none. So what do I do next? Should I remove and reinstall all my java thingies in synaptic? Should I remove and reinstall firefox? Anyone got any ideas or advice on this?

I'm only here so often because I'm too blinking lazy to learn shell!

I have nothing but problems using Java in firefox, konqueror usually loads it much better. Fortunately, the java apps I work with don't much care what browser you connect to them with.

Just out of curiosity, what would happen if you installed the UserAgent plugin and then set your browser's agent to "Internet 7"? Worth a try. You can always delete the plugin if it doesn't work.

You can try at least two other browsers you have at hand. Arora is in repository and you can download new Opera 10 from www.opera.com and install it by just doubleclick on the deb file.
Kubuntu 16.04 on two computers and Kubuntu 17.04 on DELL Latitude 13
