Re: Migrated to Kubuntu, need assistance

Sorry, I meant to suggest that you can run the same command ("dpkg -l |grep dhc") in konsole and compare with my output.

Re: Migrated to Kubuntu, need assistance

I have no more ideas. Normally, I would have suggested trying a different cable just to see if that is the problem, but your very first post in this thread suggests that you DO/DID HAVE network connectivity, just no visible DHCP server.
      Code:
      victor@Kbuntu-VLF:~$ sudo ifconfig
      eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:10:b5:5b:4f:ed
           inet6 addr: fe80::210:b5ff:fe5b:4fed/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
           RX packets:22258 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
           TX packets:11 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

It also occurred to me that perhaps it's the cable. I just recently bought the switch, which replaced a Belkin router I think I purchased in 2003 because I was having connectivity problems. After a little troubleshooting, it was thought the old router needed replacing.

Here is the output. It appears that everything is ok.

          victor@Kbuntu-VLF:~$
          ictor@Kbuntu-VLF:~$ sudo dpkg -l |grep dhc
          [sudo] password for victor:
          ii dhcp3-client 3.1.1-5ubuntu8 DHCP client
ii dhcp3-common 3.1.1-5ubuntu8 common files used by all the dhcp3* packages
          victor@Kbuntu-VLF:~$

Hey guys, I'll probably get some new cables tmorrow and retest the connection. It would really be a bummer if it turns out to be the problem. The upside would be if it works. I'll let you know. It seems to be the only possibility left. According to deductive reasoning, whenever you've exhausted all other possibilities, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth (or the solution in this case).

OK, so I only read up a few posts, but if you bought a switch to replace a router, then that is your problem. You don't have a DHCP server. Switches don't hand out IP addresses, and they don't handle NAT. If you have multiple PC's on the network, then it won't work. It should work if you plug the PC into the modems lan port, but you will probably have to shut everything down for a while, so the ISP assigns an IP address when it is turned back on. I would power down the modem and the PC, plug the PC straight into the modem (PC LAN port into the Modem LAN port). Turn on the modem (after it has been off for ATLEAST 10 minutes...preferably more), let it boot completely. Then boot the PC. Be sure to let the modem boot completely before turning on the PC.

Yes, you can even add a second router attached to the main router (without disrupting your current network), you may be able to get one on the cheap (real cheap) 8)

Re: Migrated to Kubuntu, need assistance

yes, thanks to everyone for your help. I think I'll replace the router. I spoke with the ISP and their modems don't suport NAT, which is what the switch is most likely using. They did offer to set me up with fixed IPs for a price, of course. LOL. Those guys just don't quit, do they?

I tried replacing the cables but that didn't solve the problem. I should have replaced the old router with a new one rather than buy a switch.

Make sure to power down the modem for a bit before installing the router. It will help the router pull a new dhcp address.
