vnc viewer tightvnc gray screen

I followed everything on this link
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=259448&page=7

EXCEPT the xinitd configuration.
Instead I put the following in my /etc/local.rc

su <username> -c " cd /home/<username> && vncserver :1 -geometry 1280x1024 -depth 24"

I get a gray screen with my .vnc/xstartup containing:

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc


[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
startkde &

Is there something I'm missing using 9.04?

the line............xsetroot -solid grey.................may have somthing to do with it .......but I dont know for shure sence I dont have it installed or use it.

try ...man vnc.....in konsole.

it's actually the gray / checkered screen that kind of looks like old-in-day tvs with static.
