Kubuntu and Tata indicom Dialup USB modem

    Hi

I am new to this forum.

I have just installed Ubuntu 9.04 and Kubuntu 9.04 side by side.

I am using Tata Indicom dialup USB modem to connect internet.

The problem is with Kubuntu. During startup the modem gets detected by Knetwork manager as ttyACM0. But network manager could not auto configure the modem.

I created a new connection with Knetwork Manager, when I connect - the network manager gets hung. It shows as "Preparing to connect".

I installed KPPP, configured and tried with it, it showed me a message the modem does not respond.

I treid with pppconfig also , plog shows that the script failed to connect or something.

As the last resort, I installed WVDIAL , I was able to get Kubuntu connected to the internet. Felt happy. I did a system update, fine. Before the reboot, I installed Guarddog.

I did a reboot. From then, the wvdial shows in the terminal that I am connected if I dialup(shows local IP, remote IP etc.,)

But none of the applications could connect the network. Tried konqueror and Bitdefender etc., , no luck.

I thoght it was Guarddog which blocks the outgoing traffic, so I removed and tried connecting many times. Nothing happened.

The same modem works perfectly with Ubuntu 9.04 without any need of configuration.

What exactly is blocking my internet connection?

It is very unfortunate that nowhere I could find a solution to this in our forum.

    Pls help me, Thanks.

Re: Kubuntu and Tata indicom Dialup USB modem

I tried Guarddog once with Feisty or Hardy and had problems, so I haven't used it since then.

There is definitely a real problem with NetworkManager and the applet in Kubuntu Jaunty.
Many people suggest removing both NetworkManager and the applet and then installing wicd.

I also had problems with KPPP and suggest not using it. The only thing that works on Jaunty is
pppoeconf, then pon dsl-provider to connect.

Thanks. I read the above mentioned post.

But I am able to make the internet connecton through WVDIAL. The only problem is no applications could connect the internet.

Is something blocking the outgoing traffic?

Should I definitely go for wicd?

        First, type
        Code:
         sudo pppoeconf
        then
        Code:
        ifconfig

see if your output has anything like this, it may have more

        kevin@jj:~$ ifconfig
        eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:d4:05:27:a2
        inet addr:41.208.191.171 Bcast:41.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
        inet6 addr: fe80::216:d4ff:fe05:27a2/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
        RX packets:8435 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
        TX packets:6873 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
        collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
        RX bytes:7546935 (7.5 MB) TX bytes:695851 (695.8 KB)
        Interrupt:16

        ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
        inet addr:41.208.189.177 P-t-P:10.19.2.1 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1492 Metric:1
        RX packets:6426 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
        TX packets:4718 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
        collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
        RX bytes:4839749 (4.8 MB) TX bytes:320083 (320.0 KB)

        kevin@jj:~$

If that fails then try wvdial again.

You could look at your log files to see if there are some clues as to the modem being recognized or not.
