Usually they are blue when they are on (my Eee PC is like that) -- but I don't know about Swiss power indicators!

I think maybe your wireless is turned off in BIOS -- better check that.

      Re: Wireless on Toshiba M800-104

ahhh...that makes more sense...sorry for the misunderstanding...

Different laptops will be different colors, but typically, if the light is on, it is active...mine is blue, my work laptop is green...

now, it is possible that red on yours means it is off...not sure...

Also, if wicd is showing the access points at all, there HAS to be communication going on, which would mean it is on.

So...I still go back to this point...even though you see 'open' access points, it doesn't necessarily mean that you will be able to connect to them, it just means no encryption. There are other types of security (like MAC filtering).

Your best bet to test this is to take the laptop somewhere that has free wifi and connect to that, to see what happens.

I just remembered my German camera's battery charger is green when it is charging and red when the battery is fully charged. So maybe red=OK in German.

wicd should show whether each AP that it can see is non-encrypted or encrypted. If you can connect to a non-encrypted AP, then try your browser and see what happens.

          In the bios I see:
          lan enabled
          wake up lan wirelesslan enabled

          Red id deffinately innactive.
          Green is GO

I'll make a screen shot of wicd now

Hmmmm --- that's a little disturbing. I dunno how your Toshiba works, but on my Asus Eee PC, the light is just a dumb indicator that the wireless radio chip is running -- it doesn't know or care whether I have configured wireless networking correctly or not. Maybe your Toshiba is smarter than that -- I hope so!

I am not sure what it tells you. It tells me tahat there is some kind of communication.

              Ungesichert = not secured.

                Re: Wireless on Toshiba M800-104

so, the way I'm reading this, there is only one unsecured network, correct?

If that is the case, I would be willing to bet that it has been closed off some other way, and you won't get a connection to it at all.

Well, I dunno -- the screenshot looks like it is connected to "Kabelgebundenes Netzwerk" -- can you ping google.com or something?

                      Re: Wireless on Toshiba M800-104

@dibl - I believe that is his cabled network. The top connection shows a 'Disconnect' button, as opposed to a 'connect' button, which I think means he is connected via that (cabled) connection...

                        Kabelgebundenes Netzwerk
                        means cable lan.
It always reverts to that when I disconnect from cable and try to connect to a wireless (swoi) in this case ap.

Oh yeah, you are so right mm0!

@Fintan, use wicd to disconnect from the cable (or just pull the plug) and then cursor down to the unsecured AP and click "connect".

                              I'll take it!

It looks like wicd is working correctly -- you just need to be disconnected from the cable, and in the range of the unsecured AP and I think it will work.
