Wi-fi and DSL not working when upgrating to 9.04

    Hi,

I used to connect with wifi (both WEP and WPA/TKIP) and DSL without any problem with Knetwork manager under kubuntu 8.04

I the upgraded to 9.04 and I lost my sound (this is another post) and started using Network manager (the widget of plasmoid). Now I can not connect anymore with the WPA/TKIP (but stil with WEP).

I the played a little bit too much and lost even the scan from shell of the available connections, installed wicd that saw the connections intermittently and did not have my encription (WPA/TKIP) too.

I'm wondering reinstalling the software for handling internet connection, what are the suggestions among Knetwork Manager, nm and wicd ? is there any special care in performing the installation?

    Thanks in advance.
    g.

ps may i say that I'm loosing really a "lot" of time reconfiguring stuff that used to work perfectly in the older version? is this the right price to pay to have nice graphic special effects??

Make sure your kernel updated. It should be 2.6.28-11. (Look at the grub menu when you boot.) If not see:

I also "upgraded" from 8.10 to 9.04, and there's a long list of stuff that used to work perfectly but is now broken. To start off with, it didn't properly update the lilo menu and I had to manually edit menu.lst in order to even boot to the new kernel. It broke my sound and left orphaned apps - a very dirty "upgrade" indeed. Now the WiFi works as long as the session isn't locked, but if I close the screen on my netbook or allow the screensaver to kick in, it disconnects the WiFi and there's no way to reconnect. I have to reboot in order to reconnect. Clicking on the entry in the new network widget only opens a new connection dialog - that's the opposite of helpful. I can't find any place in the new network manager that lets you connect with an existing network if not already connected. The old network manager is still installed but doesn't work. Bluetooth still doesn't support anything useful, like my GPSr or mobile phone. Power management is several steps back, and the new applet is less useful. The CPU speed widget is gone. I only upgraded so quickly because of what they were saying about the "improvements" in bluetooth and WiFi. What a nightmare! >

I solved my WiFi problems by installing WiCD. Unfortunately, there's a catch-22 because it requires you to uninstall the existing network manager before it will install. That will leave you without a network manager, and therefore network access, when you're finally able to install WiCD. The solution to that is to download the .deb before you uninstall the old network manager, or (as I was forced to do) download the .deb to a different machine and copy it over with a thumb drive. The good news is that now I have "connect" and "disconnect" buttons available right up front, as well as "connect..." being immediately available on a right-click on the widget. It's what the ubuntu app should have been in the first place.

          Instructions here:
          http://wicd.sourceforge.net/download.php
and you can download the .deb from here:

            Hi,

I have installed wicd, it works quite fine, the only problem is that it does not have wpa2 and one specific network I need is exactly wpa2. other kind of encryption and ethernet works fine.

I agree, 9.04 is not a robust release, I'm still fighting with sound issues and I'm experiencing some other strange stuff such as that this morning I found my laptop on but frozen (last night I switched off and I wait until all the leds turned off...)

            Best,
