Re: Kubuntu 9.04 LiveCD changed my hostname

I powered "everything" off, then back up...
Actually... a funny thing... I had to do this anyway because my service provider sent me a new power supply for my router (for what ever reason) and I had to do this power-down / replace anyway and I have been procrastinating on doing it... kubuntu pushed me to finally get it done...

I powered down the entire power strip which everything is plugged into, including the entire power b/u and fiber feed system along with the router so there is nothing else I can power-down and up again (unless I shut off the main switch to my house) JK :P

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 LiveCD changed my hostname

I really don't want to have to mess with my system to fix this too much because Granular 1.0 is not current, and we are actually in the process of switching our base so we have a long workload ahead of us and I really, really love the way I have this install setup and working and they will have to rip it from my cold dead hands.....

so "something", somewhere in my machine... is desperately holding onto this hostname... and I cannot figure out for the life of me "what" or "where" and I know pretty much nothing as too the inner guts of any buntus that's why I came here, but I realize it is prob difficult on your end as the 'buntu infrastructure is different

and just powering it off mite not clear the cached info.......you may try the reset buton on the rowter genraley a little button over the power or nearit that you hold in with a pen or pencel for a manufactur amount of time mines 10 seconds to reset everything to default .........you will half to redo eney config's you did initaley sutch as WEP or wether to use it or not if it has wirless and the sutch.

consalt the info and instuctions for your device first

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 LiveCD changed my hostname

Unfortunately I have no experience with Granular Linux (It's based on pclinuxos, right?), perhaps these instructions will help in setting a hostname:
http://warnet-connexxion.blogspot.co...pclinuxos.html (You should at least check the contents of the files, if they exist)

You can also try: 'hostname the_hostname_you want' to see if that changes your hostname (even temporarily)

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 LiveCD changed my hostname

I will consult with the main dev for Granular to see if he can figure this out. Tough part is, he has been away on business related things for a bit so it's difficult to get in touch with him atm.

I really dont want to play around with my router too much (I scare easily :P)

I guess I will take a break, and over the next few days see what I can accomplish and post back with any changes/results and hopefully a solution... that might be helpful to anyone else in the future who might come across this.

In the meantime, I will also try to hopefully get in touch with a buntu dev to see if they can figure it out too...
I never tried Debian and now I'm wondering.... if I do... if it might change it to gemini@debian or something? just out of curiosity and because Im a glutton for punishment and a little psychotic

Thanks all for the effort put in so far

and just so everyone knows and we are all up front......
I am the graphics dev for Granular, and none of this was to bash or rant... it is all legit' I was wanting to check out what you folks have done with KDE4 and check out the xsplash and was thinking of kubuntu for a family member... so... hopefully we can forget the way this all opened and keep in touch on this matter

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 LiveCD changed my hostname

if i am not mistaken the default hostname on a kubuntu install is <username>-desktop (or-laptop).

as for as live disk changing your hostname, i don't see how, i have been running a kubuntu system on this computer for a few years now, and have booted many a live disk (mostly kubuntu ones betas and what not), i have NEVER had this happen on any of my machines(nor have i heard of this before). it doesn't make much sense as we all know the "liveOS" is really just in RAM. lmilano's suggestion of it being put back from your router(or other device) is the only reason i could see for it happening.. then again i am not a dev on this project just a forum user and tester of alpha/beta goodness.

however if the live cd is creating this problem it should be resolved.

                      yes.... it's me

and I know this is all really weird this happening from using a LiveCD but, it has. I have no idea if it is simply fault on my end (which has potential to be likely) but I know all I selected was the top option from the LiveCD boot prompt and, well.... here I am trying to figure this out.

know what I was thinking over dinner?
I'm gonna try rebooting the machine with the etho disconnected and see what happens.
I wonder if the port on my router is hung up?

I'll post back with a result

ok.... buntu's are in the clear.... (for now)

seems it is this one port that is holding onto the ubuntu hostname.
But I am still not to blame because I'm psychotic and not that "techie" :P

So now, I have to figure out where the heck I put all the paperwork for my router, because it has all my info to access it and change settings etc.
I would apologize for all the ruckus but... I am still unsure why only this particular LiveCD (and the XBMC livecd before it) have been the only ones to cause this to happen, out of so many I have used before?
Was it just the "wrong time / wrong place" scenario? This might be one of those things we'll never be able to figure out.

Either way, I wish I could find out cuz now it will bug/haunt me to my death.

And, the fact that a port on a router would or even could retain such information for so long, and after a reboot, etc.... makes no sense to me.

                              haha

I wonder, if my router were to "accidentally" blow out... I could just get a new one in it's place and save myself the impending task. 8)

Thanks to the crowd this event drew in for trying to help figure this out.
See? When I screw things up.... I do it BIG!
But, like I said.... I would still love to be able to figure out why just these two? What has occured within the time-frames of me using those livecd's that could have caused this phenomena?
A split -second power outage or surge? Jupiter aligning with Mars?
