but in lmilano's defence your first post was IMO a bit harsh and rantey.............dont get me rong but when the rest of us read it (withought the benifit of your personal frustration) it coms off as a berating or tonge lashing and not a request for help.......and beleve me thars plentey of pepole that post JUST to say bad things and arnt realey looking for help.....go figure

trust me, I know this all too well, as I do support and run my own forum...

I agree it was seemingly demanding and bossy but... to justify, I was/am a bit upset by this and in these situations, it can often make it far worse to come ripping in as a mod or what not and claim it to be a "rant" off the start and accuse someone of bashing or using harsh words and putting words into their mouths which they never, themselves used (like "the EVIL buntu's)

so, to make a long story short... I came in upset and lmilano came in and made me instantly angrier....

Like I say, if the solution works, I am pleased... and now I am aware that it could be the way I originally set up this machine... (and the other) My bad and I will own up to it.
If not, I hope to find out "why" and hopefully be able to be directed to somewhere I can work with someone (a dev) to get to the bottom of it.

We all know that end-users will often come in irrate and ready to wage war... To come out to greet them tottin guns is not the best choice IMO

I finally got everything moved away pluggin away at moving things .... turned off my router & waited to the count of 20, then turned it back on.... have rebooted my machine and.... still when in console I get

I d/l the kubuntu 9.04 .iso
burned it to a cd
placed it into my cd rom, rebooted my machine
selected "try kubuntu without making changes to your computer"
and tried it out...., then
rebooted the machine a removed the cd from the cd-rom

I have turned my machine off & on quite a bit since then... and even gave opensolaris 2009.6 Livecd a try the day after... and still get this same result (even after performing a router power-down / up and reboot)

Hmmmmm.

Well, if the Kubuntu Live CD is now laying somewhere far away from your computer, and yet your computer with its empty optical drive is booting Kubuntu Linux, the answer to "why" is "Because it is installed on the computer that way." Inadvertently, perhaps, but nevertheless it is so.

The ISO file that is downloaded and burned has no users, so the Live CD mode comes up with some generic "user@ubuntu$" prompt (I forget what it actually is). I suppose one could, perhaps, use the "kuser" routine to add a user to a running Live CD session, then MAYBE figure out a way to make it perform a S2RAM or S2DISK, so it appears to come back from hibernation as a real system with the user logged in, but that's a stretch in my mind, because I don't think you can get enough of the system loaded into RAM to preserve everything that it needs from the running CD. I really think you are booting an installed Kubuntu system. Installed to what, I cannot say.

You don't have a bootable USB stick in that PC, perchance?

I'll speculate that when you were "trying" it, you "tried" the installer, and at a point when asked your user name, you answered "gemini" -- that's the only way your name could have been inserted into an installed system. It's not on the Live CD, I can assure you if reboot the Kubuntu Live CD (not the hard drive ....) the Kubuntu Live CD has no user name associated with you. You would have to remaster the ISO contents to make "gemini" the default user, and burn a new Live CD.

So, is this where we learn about the OS that was formerly your bootable system? :P

Well, the livecd shouldn't (won't) affect any installed system directly, but it's possible that (depending on how the network/router is set up) that a hostname is carried over after a reboot (if hostname is sent/received via dhcp).

What was your hostname before running the livecd (localhost isn't a "real" hostname, just an alias), and what do you have in /etc/hosts?

I'd recommend either changing your hostname manually (editing both /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts simultaneously...this is important, sudo may break if the hostnames do not match in /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname...you can open the files for editing with 'kdesudo kate /etc/hosts /etc/hostname'), and/or check your router settings and edit as necessary.

wait a minute folks.... haha

first off, as I type this, there is no disc in any of my drives (kubuntu livecd or any other type)
I am on my Granular install and did not, in any way or means try the installer or install kubuntu to this machine

it is my original OS, and when I go into konsole now (or any other terminal) as user "gemini" or root / su (Granular does not use sudo, we use su) same thing so no matter....

the hostname used to be "new-host-3" so it would normally show in console as:
gemini@new-host-3

and su would bring me into:
root@new-host-3 gemini

What I seem to have now, are these files associated with etc/host etc

01. - /etc/hosts.deny

02. - /etc/hosts.allow

03. - /etc/hosts.conf

the /etc/hostname is not there.

so I am not too sure what is happening here.

Ah, sorry...I didn't catch that you didn't use *buntus as your installed system (hostname configuration varies quite a bit between distros, /etc/hostname is the "debian" way).

You should definitely still check your router configuration, and refer to GranularLinux documentation on hostname configuration.

I'm just trying to figure out why (and this is not meant as bashing or anything) am I running into this after running the kubuntu live cd but I have never had it happen before (or after) running other livecd's including opensolaris 2009.6 (which was run after the fact), and just to mention a few in the past a couple diff. Fedora releases, the most recent OpenSuse Livecd, LighthousePup Livecd, there are many more I could name but it would not make a difference... the only thing that is different, is this result after the fact.

I'd like to know why and how I can fix it. and.. wondering if there are other people who have had this happen? Maybe they can post a solution or maybe if anyone else does one day this might help them

Also want to say I greatly appreciate everyone so far who is looking at this and trying to help

But gemini tried power-cycling the router with no luck, by my suggestion (because I had this very same hunch from the beginning, see the second post in the thread). I would really doubt the router persists host information. Unless there is more than a router involved?

Do you have a router plus a cable modem or something along these lines? I would power off everything that can cache network info ...
