fails to start if SATA mode is bios set to ahci mode

My new laptop (Packard bell dotm) only starts kubuntu (ubuntu too) if the SATA mode is set to IDE in the BIOS. If I set it to AHCI mode the Kubuntu splash screen comes up but then the screen goes black and the only way out is hardware off pushbutton. This is funny since I have installed the Kubuntu 9.04 via usb and the bios SATA mode was AHCI!!! Any suggestion?

that is wierd...my Dell has no issues with 9.04 (or even 8.10) in AHCI mode. Are you sure it is a good CD?

I downloaded the iso file from here:
http://ubuntu.gds.tuwien.ac.at/cdima...sktop-i386.iso
and used UNetbootin to "burn" the usb pendrive.

It happens exactly the same with kubuntu 9.10.
If somebody can help, I would be grateful.

I have some more information.
Once kubuntu 9.10 updated, if I change the bios settings from IDE mode into AHCI mode and attepmt to boot the system, after the kubuntu splashscreen, boot sequence stops displaying the following:

/sbin/init: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: unsupported version 28 of Verdef record
/sbin/init: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6: unsupported version 53872 of Verneed record
[ 97.801479] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!


... the caps lock led in the keyboard remains blinking... The only way out is to press power pushbutton for 10 secs and change bios settings back to ide mode.

I have had the experience where the installer could not see a SATA drive when the BIOS was set to AHCI mode. That was on an Asus P5Q Pro motherboard. It would see it when the mode was "Legacy IDE". After I installed it with the BIOS mode set to "legacy IDE", then I was able to set it back to AHCI and the system would boot correctly and run correctly. So the mode setting seemed to be interfering only with the detection function built into the installer.

Don't know whether that helps -- that is the the little bit of experience I've had dealing with the issue.

Also make sure the BIOS is at the newest version available.

Haven't seen an answer to this on any forums,
and we had this issue on some of our servers with an intel s3200SH/AH boards.

it comes down to adding no probes to your kernel.

so find your grub.conf
add
"ide0=noprobe ide1=noprobe"
minus the quotes to your kernel.


kernel etc etc etc ide0=noprobe ide1=noprobe

for example.

I'll keep my theories and explanation to myself and quietly hide in a corner.

hope this helps some people out.

Hello again,
Upgraded to Kubuntu 10.04 LTS and something weird happened.
After installation and before system first boot, I changed bios configuration and set ahci mode. The first boot worked but not the second nor third... the simptoms are the same as described before.
My laptop only works with Kubuntu in IDE mode...

By the way... Could you Caleb be so kind to tell some more details about the solution that worked for you?
I tried to find the grub.conf file and I failed. Thanks!
