[SOLVED]Kubuntu 9.04 boot problem on Vaio

    Hi,

i just started to use a sony vaio vgn-sr100 series and tried to install kubuntu 9.04.
Everything seems to be ok during the boot. The X server loads, ksplash shows the first icon and then i get the message "could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation".
Then, i click OK and the system drops me to the kdm login screen waiting for a user and password.

    any suggestion?

    thanks

Re: Kubuntu 9.04 boot problem on Vaio

I'm running 9.10 64bit on a Sony VAIO VGN-FW140E/H and it runs well.

I'd suggest re-downloading the iso, doing an md5sum check on it. If it passes then burn it at 4X, or as slow as your burner will go, then do an md5sum check on the CD. IF it passes OK then reboot and try that.

    To test the CD use:
    dd if=/dev/cdrom bs=2048 | head -c 692934656 | md5sum

but replace the big number with the actual size of the ISO file you are using. Dolphin will show that value in the "Properties" of the iso file.

Did the md5sum on the CD check as well? Kubuntu sets on top of Ubuntu. It may happen, but is not common, for an Ubuntu livecd to give a desktop but Kubuntu won't.

          The md5sum is OK.

Curiously, when i tried to boot from a usb (generated from the same iso) it worked!
The boot and the installation went fine and now everything works...
