    Reinstall kubuntu?

I was having a problem with kubuntu before where it was taking an unreasonably long time to delete anything. I posted about my concerns in the ubuntu forums and was advised to upgrade to KDE 4.3.1, i did this and everything went wrong, plasma crashed, i couldn't log in ect.

I came to these forums are read the instructions and saw that upgrading was only for advanced users, so i decided i would wait for KK before using the newest KDE. Anyway, gnome still works (i had both installed) and i was wondering if its possible to delete all my KDE files, so i have only ubuntu, and then reinstall kubuntu. That would save me the hassle of a clean install.

    Re: Reinstall kubuntu?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but you *should* be able to get rid of all the KDE parts of your installation by typing 'sudo aptitude purge kubuntu-desktop' in a terminal window. You might also want to get rid of the folder in your home directory called .kde - perhaps just rename it to something else so you've got it there as a backup.

This is part of the terminal output, am i okay to reinstall now or should something be done about these errors?

And how exactly do i reinstall?

      Code:

        Re: Reinstall kubuntu?

This seems to be an issue affecting those who start with ubuntu and who then subsequently elect to install kde.

A fix has been posted here

        http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1227027

        Hope this helps

          Re: Reinstall kubuntu?

Yes i no longer seem to be getting than error now, so to reinstall to the previous KDE version that comes with 9.04, what would i do? Remove purge kubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-docs and the 5 or so other packages that come up when i search for 'kubuntu' in synaptic?

            Re: Reinstall kubuntu?

If you are now running kde 4.3.1, I see little point in downgrading to the version which shipped with 9.04 as there is little comparison. I would not go down that route.

What problems are you now experiencing? If you are still experiencing slowness you can try launching a terminal and running top. Are there any processes that are hogging memory and CPU time? The chief culprit is often xorg.

            Let us know

how did you try to upgrade to KDE 4.3.1?
and withch ver. of Kubuntu ar you on ?

when I uped to KDE 4.3.1 I tryed with Kpackagekit first just to see what was going to happen to most GUI type pepole.
and the resault was the same as you .....A login to a wallpaper that could do NOTHING
so back to a working desktop(I allso have Gnome) and finish the upgrade with " sudo apt-get dist-upgrade " and then all was well.
it seams that Kpackagekit held back all the KDE 4.3.1 apps. ?

@vinny yep that console command, as well as a few other update commands i can't remember eventually resolved the problem

Before i couuldn't even log in without plasma crashing and not desktop loading, however i removed kubuntu-desktop package, then resinstalled it, and tried a bunch of console commands, and everything seems to be working quite well now. I am using KDE4.3.1

                2. Some small annoyances, that were not in the previous KDE version, when i'm using FF, sometimes the writing at the very top of the page, above the file, edit, view, is all scrambled when i switch between tabs.

                3. Also, in the system tray, i have a notification icon, which tells me there are no new notifications, how can i hide it?

                4. Is there a way to change the task manager theme? I couldn't find it under 'appearance' settings

                  Re: Reinstall kubuntu?

I had that trouble with Akonadi too. Very irritating.

                  The fix is here

                  http://techbase.kde.org/Projects/PIM...adi_startup.3F

It won't work if you already have applications that rely on it though.

So far as notifications are concerned, right click and select unlock widgets. Right click on the system tray and select the settings. Uncheck notifications.

                    Thanks for your help

Is there anything that can be done about the firefox taskbar? Sometimes the writing is jumbled, othertimes it displays the headline of the wrong tab

                      Re: Reinstall kubuntu?

It also seems to have had a weird effect on this post as well as no matter how I view it (whether from a Linux or Windows) machine the width of the page is far wider than the viewing area

This might be a configuration issue arising out of the use of firefox (a GTK application) within KDE. I am assuming you run (the same copy of) firefox within gnome?

Try system settings /appearance/fonts and ensure that Fonts force DPI is set to 96, although to be honest I am guessing a bit.

                        Re: Reinstall kubuntu?

Ok i've forced fonts dpi to 96, yep i use the same copy of FF as from gnome, i think it has something to do with that error report i posted distorting the page, as it was fine before if i remember correctly.

I would like to be able to view thumbnails of flv and avi files in dolphin, in the previous KDE version i remember i just installed mplayer-thumbnails and it worked, heres a screenshot:
