Install and boot problems on a Compaq M700

I am trying to install kibintu 9.04 on my Compaq Armada M700. I used a DVD that I burned from I iso. I also used a DVD that I got from a Ubuntu book that had I Kibuntu ISO. Both ways I would only get to a slpash then it would freeze up. I then made a Kubuntu 8.1 disk. That loaded and intsalled ok. When I ran it Kubuntu made the up grades. It also made a version upgrade. When I start now at the boot menu beside the recover options I get
    ubuntu 9.04 kernal 2.6.28-15
    ubuntu 9.04 kernal 2.6.24-23
When I try the 28-15 version it frezzes at the same piont as when I tried to load the 9.04 version.
The 24-23 version will load ok.
How do I determine what version my kubuntu is?
How do I get the 28-15 version to work?
I think it might be trying to initialize my pcmcia feature in my computer.
I have tired it with and without a card pluged in.
    Any ideas?

can you disable the pcmcia interface from the laptop bios? Otherwise, I would try adding "nopcmcia" to the boot parameters temporarily, do you know how to do that? (mainly hitting "e" in the grub window for "edit")

    HTH!

That did not help. I installed Ubunutu and have the same problem with the same kernal version.

Could it be the display? Can you boot to the rescue mode?

Is that laptop a Pentium III, something like this?:

What is CPU clock speed? How much memory is installed?

You may be asking too much to run a current Kubuntu Linux on it -- those specs do not meet the *buntu "Recommended Minimum" specs here:

              My M700 is 1 GHz, 327 K 0f memory.
It will boot in both Kubuntu and Ubuntu with Kernel 2.6.27-14.
I will not boot with Kernel 26.28-15.
I have tried to boot in the recovery mode in both and it does not dot help.
I also tired the alternet iso for ubnutu and that also froze up.
When it starts up it goes to the first sceens with the small progression bars ok.
When it it gets to the screen that has the progression bar grows across the screen it stops about 1/4 over.
Any ideas on why the latest kernel does not work?
