Install side by side with windows XP pro sp3 - dual boot

    Hi,
I'm trying to install kubutnu 9.04 side by side with windows XP.
I downloaded the image and burned it to a CD.
when I boot the CD every thing works great and I get to the menu - when trying to install or just try with out install - I get to the screen where I have the progress bar(under the kubuntu logo) - after the progress bar reaches the end the screen goes black.
for a couple of minutes it seems that the CD drive and the computer are working, but after that the screen stays black and nothing happens. I tried waiting some thing like 10 minutes but nothing is changing. this happens in both install and try without install.
I tried the disk on another computer and it worked fine. I also used the check defects on the main menu - it worked and no defects were found.
I used to have ubuntu 9.04 on that PC , but than I inserted a windows xp CD and boot from it and that destroyed the dual booting, so I just formatted the ubuntu partition and merged it with the windows one(my guess is that this is the reason why I can't install it again - maybe there are "left overs" from the last installation).
I have a Pentium 4 3GHZ processor on an Intel mother board , with 3GB memory , and Nvidia graphic card.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Alon.

I will try - but just for the knowledge - what is this combination responsible for?

hoping it will bring up the CLI (command line interface)...if so, not sure if it will ask you to login, or not...but if not, enter 'startx' and see what it says.

          first - 10x
second - if it will ask me to login is there any default user/password?
third - do you think it has anything to do with what I said about the previous installation of ubuntu Jaunty?

try demo for username and demo for password.

If that doesn't work, try rebooting, but choose safe graphics mode (should be an option on the boot menu).

P.S. no, it wouldn't be leftovers from a previous install...the live CD doesn't use your harddrive.

wait...did you already install 9.04? I thought you were trying to get the liveCD to load...

If you already have it installed, when it asks for login, just enter the username and password you used during setup...then enter startx and press enter.

Re: Install side by side with windows XP pro sp3 - dual boot

I'm sorry - probably I wasn't clear enough in my question.
in the past I did a full install of ubuntu 9.04 - it was side by side with windows Xp and every thing was ok.
one day I boot the PC from the windows XP CD - which caused the dual booting t be disabled - so I when the computer started - windows came automatically.
I tried to fix the problem with no luck - so I used Gpart to format the partitions on which the ubuntu was installed on and then merged the unallocated space into the windows partition.
That is what I meant by "left-overs" - maybe the ubuntu left anything on the windows partition - which is now some how preventing me from installing the kubuntu...
                  Hope I'm more clear now

Re: Install side by side with windows XP pro sp3 - dual boot

                    yep...got it.

OK, so for the first thing, no the leftovers wouldn't affect the live CD boot.

second...if it ever happens again, you can fix the boot by loading the live CD and entering these commands in konsole:

                    Code:
                    sudo grub
                    find /boot/grub/stage1
This should output some info...you are looking for the hd(x,y) info where x and y are #'s.
                    then enter:

                    Code:
                    root hd(x,y)
where x and y are the numbers you find in the first step...
                    then:
                    Code:
                    setup hd(x)
                    where x is...yep...the x from above!

in the meantime, try booting the liveCD in safe graphics mode. see what happens.

already tried that when I had the problem - didn't work
                      I will try that.
is it something like windows safe mode?

sorta...it loads kubuntu with a different video driver (vesa, I think), and it will probably be low res, but at least that will tell us if it is video hardware issues. Do you know what the vid card is? I know you mentioned nvidia...do you know the model?

I'm pretty sure its Nvidia GeForce 6200 turboCache I think 256MB but not 100%
