After I finished my upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty, at first the only discrepancy I saw was the fact that my usplash for startup hadn't changed, while the one for shutdown did. (I posted that here: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3105480.0. Once I found the new panel applet for network management, everything was golden...for awhile.
One day, all of a sudden some things were different. After logon, I got a screen saying that one of my sound devices (STAC92xx Analog) was removed. The sound was still working, so this didn't seem to be a problem--looks like it was replaced by PulseAudio. My pager settings inexplicably changed from 2 tows to 1. But the big one is that the network panel applet didn't seem to be working right anymore. Under general settings, Enable Wireless is not checked and it is apparently disabled because I cannot re-check it. Since I didn't have wireless I plugged in a wired connection. When I rebooted everything was normal again. After some checking I learned that if I booted with a wired connection, everything was the way it was before, including networking. So I can boot with a wired connection, then disconnect and continue with wireless. But if I boot without a wired connection, the wireless won't work.
Today I confirmed that the wireless actually works, its just the applet that's not working. I realized that if I plugged in a wired connection after booting it worked, even though nothing changed in the applet. I then took the time to write a wpa_supplicant.conf and attempted to connect the wireless from the command line and I was successful.
So anybody have any ideas what the problem might be? It appears to be a panel/GUI/KDE thing. For the life of me I don't know why all those things would be different if I start with an ethernet cable.
