    Re: mdprobe fatal error

    Your kernel library is there.
Some kernel modules is not finding what it wants, though.
    Please post the output of:

    Code:
    cat /etc/modules

      Re: mdprobe fatal error

      oracle1@oracle1-desktop:~$ cat /etc/modules
      # /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
      #
      # This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
      # at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

      lp
      oracle1@oracle1-desktop:~$

since I sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-'uname -r' I now have two identical error messages at boot but I stress everything is working fine and I have all my sound back including my softphone

        Re: mdprobe fatal error

Well, since it's working, that's a good sign.
But we still don't know what the kernel is complaining about.
The only suggestion I have left would be to look through the procedure you used to install the audio driver:

when i asked why my audio wasn't working I was given a link to a standard page with the various commands needed to be cut and pasted and i did this
If you want to pursue this further, my guess is that's where we need to look.

could you pls refer to this thread for my exact instructions from dibl

unfortunately my obsessive compulsive disorder cannot cope with any defect with my PC. I built it from scratch, I turned away and shunned my XP mates in search of a better OS. A lesser and smarter man would accept this error and carry on but not not me, no. LOL

From this point on I am doing commands that I have done before. Because I didn't receive any error messages I didn't proceed with the following I am now going to do it to see what happens.
I cannot see an error there but I went the manual description and this is the edit i did to /etc/apt/sources.list

After trying to put in putting the two lines at the end,
          deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ jaunty free non-free
          deb-src http://packages.medibuntu.org/ jaunty free non-free

I noticed they were already there so i left the file alone it looks like this

          #deb cdrom:[Kubuntu 9.04 _Jaunty Jackalope_ - Release i386 (20090420.1)]/ jaunty main restricted

Also this machine seems to spend a lot of time like 30 secs to a minute to run through the ram self test on boot I doubt very much that is related, I suspect my ram might be suss. Is this a relevant issue

                Re: mdprobe fatal error

Everything looks good there. There should not be anything in medibuntu that could cause a boot problem.

For what it's worth, the medibuntu line in my sources.list looks like this:
                deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ jaunty free non-free

I'm stumped with this one at this point. The only thing I'm wondering about is that your kernel version is -11. On my system, it's -15. I do have several kubuntu ppas enabled on my system, so the newer kernel may be coming from one of them.

I didn't see how you are doing your system updates, but if you have been using apt-get upgrade, you might try apt-get dist-upgrade. That might pull in a newer kernel version, as well as newer versions of other stuff.

One other thing comes to mind. Are you booting off the same partition that kubuntu is installed on? In the boot directory, there should be a bunch of files, starting with abi-, config-, initrd.img- System.map-, vmcoreinfo- and vmlinuz-, and ending with your kernel version, (2.6.28-11-generic). Are they all there?

                      same error at the begining

the only thing that has changed the pattern is sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-'uname -r' and it made one error turn into 2 errors which makes me think this is an area to examine. All files you mentioned abi config etc are all there.

This is getting curioser and curioser.

the exact error message is cannot load lib/modules/2.6.28.11-generic
So you are now getting the message cannot load ... 2.6.28.15-generic, correct?

At what point in the boot process does this message appear?

                        Try typing
                        Code:
                        dmesg
and see if you can find the error message in the stuff that it prints out.

Easiest way to locate it would be:
                        Code:
                        dmesg | grep cannot
If you can find it, maybe do a cut and past of the dmesg ouput with a few lines before and after the message.

If it doesn't show up in dmesg, the other way to get at it is to edit out the "spalsh" and "quiet" options in /boot/grub/menu.lst, and see if you can catch where it is showing up in the boot process.

This might tell us just *what* can't find what it's looking for.
We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn't want to meet. -- Stephen Hawking

                          NNNooooooHHHH

your onto something the error message remains the same this appears to be a boot configuration error I suspect this could be driven by the fact that I rearranged menu.lst remembering that I have xp first kubuntu second and debian third and debian is the master menu.lst . Grub comes up with boot default and then the error messages appear. this has something to do with debian's menu.lst config booting the system If this is the case how can I make Kubuntu's menu.lst the master boot, because I never use debian and in fact I am know wishing i never installed it. This is a copy of Kubuntu menu.lst

                              OK, that's the problem.

If your kubuntu is on sda5, I'm assuming that's an extended partition. If so, that's going to be a bit of a problem. but is nonetheless solveable. I did that for a long time, till I finally kicked Windows off the machine.

First, for the record, qqmike's definitive how-to on grub:
                              http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3081671.0

If I'm wrong, and kubuntu is on a regular partition, then it's easy to solve. You need to read Section 3 of the howto, and particularly this part:

                              SUMMARY—recipe:
                              # (hdx,y) = the partition containing the GRUB files you wish to use.
                              # (hdz) = the MBR you wish to install GRUB to.
                              sudo grub
                              grub>find /boot/grub/stage1
                              grub>geometry (hd0)
                              grub>geometry (hd1), etc.
                              grub>root (hdx,y)
                              grub>setup (hdz)
                              grub>quit
                              $exit
So if you boot into your kubuntu system, you would set (hdx,y) to where your kubuntu system is (remembering that sda3 would be (hd0,2), for example).
Once that's done, you might need to run sudo update-grub.
From your kubuntu menu.lst, it looks like the kubuntu grub hasn't spotted your debian system. If it refuses to see it, it can be added in manually.

If kubuntu is actually on an extended partition, then it will be a little trickier. Basically you will have to use a bootable partiton for your boot files, and copy them over from you extended partition system. If that's the case, we will pursue that further.
