    SOLVED: mdprobe fatal error

when i boot into 904 just for a second before the graphic comes up I can see en error code flash up mdprobe fatal error and then the system boots as normal I am wondering if this is anything serious. I have seen an experienced user flash through the kernel boot log and fix errors. Is this possible in this case. Thanks all for the help. This latest version has really got it together and is whopping the dual boot xp I have in the other partition. I have tried since since 2002 to convert and this version I believe will tip the difference, it really has it together on the install side from the point of view of a windofied user.

    Re: mdprobe fatal error

    Run
    Code:
    dmesg
and look through the early part for the modprobe error. You'll have to evaluate the failure/error to figure out whether it is serious or not (Google can help a lot). "modprobe" refers to loading kernel modules, and it could indicate some part of your system is not set up correctly -- an audio chip or some onboard device. Some boot messages about failures or errors are not important at all. For example, mine pukes up an error about my empty floppy disk drive, which of course is irrelevant to anything and of no concern.

I couldn't find any reference to the error in dmesg but i saw enough to see mdprobe fatal error unable to load lib modules

        Re: mdprobe fatal error

"Fatal" is not a good thing, normally. If possible, you really to catch the actual name of the module.

As far as you can tell, is there any aspect of your system that doesn't work right?

There are log files in /var/log that might indicate something. You can use kate to view them, or "sudo cat" them in the konsole. Take a look at the file syslog and also kern.log.

I have just had the system hang a lot worse (stopping right at the end of grub for a lot longer period) in the initial boot out of grub and it had a much more stern looking fatal error warning i didn't get a chance to see what it was i am thinking my audio might have something to do with it I found this in dmesg? wondering if it means anything

                  Re: mdprobe fatal error

You might want to wait for a second opinion before doing what I suggest here.
It looks like the kernel is having trouble recognizing your hardware.
My guess is you need to reinstall/reconfigure your kernel.
Back up all of your data and personal files before doing anything else.

Does your grub menu give you older versions of the kernel to boot from?
If so, give one of them a try and see if you still get errors.

If you don't get the errors, or if you have no older kernel, then, preferably from a console login,
                  Code:
                  uname -r
This will give you your kernel version, which will look something like:
                  Code:
                  2.6.28-15-generic
                  Then:
                  Code:
                  sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-image-2.6.28-15-generic
substituting whatever you got for uname-r for the "2.6.28-15-generic" part.

During the reinstall process, watch for any errors, particularly when it runs update-initramfs.
Then reboot, and see if you still get errors.

                    Re: mdprobe fatal error

i am getting pretty confident this has to do with the audio drivers on my motherboard setup i have a ga ma790fxt-udp5 motherboard which is brand new and on the manufacturers website it mentioned a warning about linux drivers

                    1. Due to different Linux support condition provided by chipset vendors, please download Linux driver from chipset vendors' website or 3rd party website.
                    2. Due to most hardware/software vendors no longer offer support for Win9X/ME. If some vendors still has Win9X/ME drivers available, we will publish on website.

when i asked why my audio wasn't working I was given a link to a standard page with the various commands needed to be cut and pasted and i did this and low and behold my sound works but not with the same functionality as the gigabyte disk in xp but it works. I stress the system is stable and i think my last little exploit at unlocking might have upset the kernel loading.

In the hardware manager it mentions drivers for 3D-accelerated proprietary graphics driver for ATI cards.

This driver is required to fully utilise the 3D potential of some ATI graphics cards, as well as provide 2D acceleration of newer cards. Fglrx graphics driver

when i try to activate this driver it gives a sigsev crash warning

                      Re: mdprobe fatal error

That could be. Any kind of proprietary drivers, be they sound or video, are always sources of endless amusement.

You might try booting your system with a live cd and see if you can get sound to work.

However, when I see messages like:
                      Aug 20 21:20:46 oracle1-desktop kernel: Inspecting /boot/System.map-2.6.28-11-generic
Aug 20 21:20:46 oracle1-desktop kernel: Cannot find map file.

                      and

In the boot I can see the error message cannot load lib/modules/2.6,8 i think
I start thinking that there is a problem with the installation of the kernel itself. You might still try
                      Code:
                      sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-'uname -r'
That might fix the problem, or kick the new drivers out altogether.

For the ATI drivers, search the forum, as there are several folks here who have fought this issue through.
