    Kubuntu Hangs On Boot

Hello! ( Sorry that this is my first post )

I recently installed kubuntu 9.04 'jaunty' on a new HDD, on my other computer, it booted up flawlessly the first time, but the second time it could not get past the spash screen. so i had to re-install.

    About the computer

It is a dell dimension 2400, with 512MB of ram, intel celeron processor, 80GB seagate U series HDD, and currently without an internet connection.

I think this problem might have something to do with the lack of an internet connection, but am not sure. if anyone here has any ideas, on how to fix this problem, please reply.

    Re: Kubuntu Hangs On Boot

I am having a similar problems install order xp first 9.04 second and debian third. Kubuntu is hanging in the boot and sometimes even after I reset the machine manually its hanging in the boot. I am thinking I made a big mistake putting Debian on at the end.

Do you use the default splash screen, because i do. if so i think there could be a bug causing it.

Oracle1: could you please give more details?
Tux!: Can you please elaborate? Do you mean the splash screen after user login? Or the kubuntu logo and graphical boot up you see right after booting? (before you even get asked for your username)

Welcome to the forum, we hope you stay

Here is a link to a picture of the default splash screen(not mine) http://4.bp.blogspot.com/__JNFVYfijS...00/Preview.png
It always gets stuck on the third icon.

That is often the stage at which the video driver crashes, and that sounds like what is happening on your system.
When the system hangs, try pressing CTRL-ALT-F2 (all at the same time). This should bring up a text console. The alternative is to reboot, and when you get to the login screen, before typing your password, click on the "session type" button, and choose console login.

Either way should bring you to a text screen, from which you can login with your username and password.

If this works, the next step would be to turn off compositing, which is/are the special screen effects that often cause video problems. To do this, you will need to edit one of the configuration files.

            Code:
            cd .kde/usr/share/config
            vim kwinrc
move the cursor with the down arrow dey about 8 lines, to the line that says "Enabled=true".
move the cursor over the true part, hit the i key, use the delete key to remove the word true, and type in the word false. So that it now says
            Code:
            Enabled=false
Press the ESC key, then :wq
That will save the file and exit the editor.

            Then type the following:
            Code:
            sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
            sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
It will ask you for your password during this process.
Try logging in again and see if you can get to the desktop that way.
