Re: Migrating from ubuntu to kubuntu

Hi, welcome home. I think there is an Entry in System Settings for the look and feel of the desktop, and in there there is something about making gtk use the current qt theme, something along these lines. I can check later, but you may be able to find it faster ...

make sure that you have the gtk-qt-engine installed

        Code:
        sudo apt-get install gtk-qt-engine
This should expose the SystemSettings > Appearance > GTK Styles and Fonts
menu. You can adjust as desired from there.

I should add that you may want to install the qt-curve style

        Code:
        sudo apt-get install kde-style-qtcurve
or it's gonna be really ugly.

I've installed gtk-qt-engine and kde-style-qtcurve. most programs look fine except when I browse them as a root user (like synaptic), so:

How I can apply kde/qt styles on gtk/root applications ?

          another things,
I was using nautilus in root mode but I couldn't use dolphin as a root, so:

How I can use dolphin as a root ?

I installed many none open source codecs for reading multimedia files (DVD, mp3, mp4 ...etc) on ubuntu so I could read all movies and songs by VLC or defualt ubuntu music player (I forgot its name), but after migrating to kubuntu I noticed that many DVD and mp3 files can't read by amarok and VLC too (although I installed all gstreamer codecs from synaptic, realplayer, ubuntustudio packages and xine too), so:

How I can play mp3 and DVD files in kubuntu?

Not sure why it isn't working; it does work here. Somebody else have an idea?

              Code:

              Maybe this will be helpful:

              http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683

You will probably need to set up the mediabuntu repository, and download the codecs from there. To play DVDs, you will need libdvdread4, and you will need to follow the instructions for downloading the decoder in /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh after installing libdvdread4.

                  You need kubuntu-restricted-extras

Re: Migrating from ubuntu to kubuntu

Thank you all, the problem wasn't related to missing packages I discovered that lately when I changed the the priority of Sound and Video backend from GStreamer->Xine to Xine->GStreamer. Thus all multimedia files worked without any problem, but When I set Xine as preferred backend I got warning message told me that Phonon will not working well !!!

What the reason of phonon warning message ?

I used KDE3 before but I noticed that KDE4 is a little bit slow and I suffered sometimes from this slowness, so:

How I can speedup the performance of KDE 4 ?

I've read many posts about speeding up of KDE 4 but most of them advice the users to leave KDE and use Gnome, but I hate Gnome/GTK for many reasons and I see that KDE is the future and I want (specially when Nokia updated Qt's license to LGPL) to accustomed using it (Thanks KDE folks).

How I can edit pop-up menus (mouse right click menus)?

I suffered enough when I migrated from ubuntu to kubuntu so I want to remove the current OS and install a fresh kubuntu from kubuntu alternate DVD or CD.

What's the best procedure for installing a fresh kubuntu without losing my own data ?
