<SOLVED> apt-get upgrade cannot complete - why?

This appears to be some kind of Debian issue, but that's just my amateur read on it. Here's the whole upgrade output. Ignore the Areca "serious warning". Areca runs fine, and OS upgrades have been happening fine in spite of this. NOTE the failure to do SOME of the upgrades, noted near the bottom, and the link offered. I went there, and it's incomprehensible (to me) Debian babble.

Questions: Might I expect this problem to "get resolved" by the OS gurus, in the fullness of time? Or is there something I should do myself? Any help would be, uh, helpful (and appreciated!).

Code:
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
[sudo] password for tomc:

Re: apt-get upgrade cannot complete - why?

Looks like a known/previously noted issue:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...es/+bug/305587

I'm also aware of some developmental issues recently with libc6. I would advise you to see if the passage of a few days of time makes any difference -- these things sometime just go away by themselves.

Difference between upgrade and dist-upgrade:

man apt-get
upgrade

upgrade is used to install the newest versions of all packages currently installed on the system from the sources enumerated in /etc/apt/sources.list. Packages currently installed with new versions available are retrieved and upgraded; under no circumstances are currently installed packages removed, or packages not already installed retrieved and installed. New versions of currently installed packages that cannot be upgraded without changing the install status of another package will be left at their current version.

dist-upgrade

dist-upgrade in addition to performing the function of upgrade, also intelligently handles changing dependencies with new versions of packages; apt-get has a "smart" conflict resolution system, and it will attempt to upgrade the most important packages at the expense of less important ones if necessary. So, dist-upgrade command may remove some packages.

There are need to install new packages => upgrade will give up.

Thanks dibl. That's kind of what I was thinking, but then I read Rog131's fascinating post. Totally new knowledge, and it worked. Live and learn.

I have long since stopped using apt-get upgrade, and have used exclussively, apt-get dist-upgrade.

strangley enuf I had a simaler expereance this morning.

I started my Kubuntu 9.04 JJ KDE 4.2.2 box this morning and the default update manager (part of Kpackeagkit I think) showd several updates including the 2.6.28.14 kernel and moduals and heders and thay were marked held back.

I tryed to install the updates (that wernt held back) and got the usual error ......you nead to fork.

so I closed that(kpackeagkit's update notafyier) and opend the gnome updater and it installed ALL of it no problem including the kernel

dose eneybodey know why kpackagekit STILL dosent work. IE: nead to fork...............not REALEY a problem sence synaptic and the gnome updater and the CLI work fine ......just cureus.

Wish I knew anything about kpackagekit other than I don't trust it for anything other than notifications.

At least apt-get works. And even then it's necessary to play with with some upgrades.

Adept has been left out of KDE 4 because the maintainer discontinued.

It seem many users still agree KPackageKit has problems. It is easier to use alternatives, such as apt-get or synaptic or ...

Rog131's post about dist-upgrade is useful. This is recommended by Sidux also - don't know why but it seems to work well.

"seems to work well" - Amen to that. Is now my new default usage.

Trouble is, this is now "expert knowledge" rather than default system behavior - such as naive users would employ. I don't like that. Needs fixing. I can't do it, however. I'm totally committed to Ubuntu/Kubuntu for life, but when things like OS upgrades stop working mysteriously, and don't fix themselves, well that's not just OK for the general user, for whom things need to 'just work'. And so we keep this wonderful OS parked on the sidelines, or so it seems to me.

Re: <SOLVED> apt-get upgrade cannot complete - why?

It isn't only Kubuntu. Trying to upgrade Centos 5.3, it would not complete because of an unavailable dependency for Gwenview. (Kuickshow is not included any more.) I finally learned that yum has an option for upgrade, yum install --skip-broken upgrade which lets it upgrade everything else.

I see on man apt-get it has a couple similar options, but not sure what they do. Yeah, I can read what it says, but would have to see them in action to fully understand.

-f, --fix-broken

-m, --ignore-missing, --fix-missing
