Upgrading Kubuntu from 8.10 to 9.04, safest way?

I had a 2 month struggle to get video how I wanted in 8.10! Now, I am nagged to upgrade to 9.04. Is it imperative to upgrade to get support? If I upgrade, is there an easy way to insure I can reverse in case I have problems. I don't want to start over and lose all the changes I've made! I've got an Acer 5100-3949 laptop with an attached 17" monitor running wide screen mode. The video is Radeon Express 1100. Getting it to run in wide screen mode was quite complex and caused me to reload Kubuntu many times. I'd rather stay with 8.10 than go through all that again!

Personal Opinion: Make a bckup of your important data (you need to do that regulary anyway), saving your email contacts, your html links, your odt files, etc...

Then, do a FRESH install of Kubuntu 9.04.
After that, and getting an Internet connection, do
    apt-get update
    apt-get dist-upgrade

Then go to the Medibuntu website howto page and do what you think you can do there.
