    8.10 to 9.04 Upgrade/Install Advice?

I have been running 8.10 happily and have been waiting for 9.04 to stabilize. Now seems like a good time to upgrade.

1.The question is do I click that upgrade button or install fresh from a cd?

    2. I have been hearing people mention wicd a lot.... is that something I need to concern myself about?

There is a 3rd option - download the alternate CD and then use that as the upgrade source.

That way in the event that something goes wrong you at least have the CD and are not altogether stranded.

WICD? I can tell you that the network manager installed from CD did work for me but was a bit of a pain, requiring a password every time I wanted to connect. You will probably be better off installing WICD. It might be worth doing that before the upgrade although I'm not sure whether or not it will be replaced in the process.

      Re: 8.10 to 9.04 Upgrade/Install Advice?

I had problems upgrading from the alternate cd. Upgrading online worked for me and Also before I upgraded I made a live 9.04 cd. I upgraded 2 computers and did a fresh install on the third.

The only problem I had the the linux kernal wasn't upgraded properly. So I used synaptic to re-reinstall
      the generic.

It's your choice. A clean install means a fresh system, but it's only one step from 8.10 to 9.04
The alternate CD is a good option - I always do a fresh install from the alternate CD but I'm using dual boot. So in your case, I'd keep 8.10 and add 9.04 When I'm happy with 9.04, then I'll try 9.10 (still alpha) or another distro. You shoud be able to do the upgrade using the alternate CD.

Regarding NM or wicd; it depends on your connection. If you use dhcp or unencoded wireless, then NM should work, if you use encoded wireless or a more complicated wired connection, wicd will probably be better.

Thank you all for the advice....

For kicks I will try the upgrade button. And checking the wired connection with the live disc is a good idea.

Though I do not understand what the alternate disk is. What is the differences between the alternate disc vs online upgrade?

Alternate install does not have the X.org system on it, and does not run a GUI desktop for you. Instead, it has more packages on the CD. So, it runs in character mode, and installs more packages for you during the initial installation. I actually prefer it for installation, although the Live CD is great for checking hardware compatibility before you install.

To add to this, there have been numerous instances where someone attempting to install with the live CD hasn't got past first base, whereas with the Alternate CD it has just installed. Mainly graphics issues I think so it's most likely that as you already have 8.10 installed that issue won't arise.

The upgrade worked but it was creepy because of things that did not belong... ie adept.

So I did a fresh install. I was impressed with how most things worked out of box. video card, sound, ethernet and wifi, touch pad etc.
