    Going from Kubuntu to Ubuntu

I have ceased bothering to try and sort out the many inadequacies in Kubuntu 9.04. Short of wiping the installation clean and starting again, is there an easy way of switching over to something which might just possibly work?

Yep, just install ubuntu-desktop. Then, you can start uninstalling KDE components you may not need for a clean up ...

I am glad you reported back, or either said thank you (besides coming here to insult Kubuntu and get free help)

Re: Going from Kubuntu to Ubuntu

When he "announced" that he was moving to Ubuntu I checked his history. He has a TOTAL of 5 posts, one chiming in with the "Dolphin can read CDs" problem. So, he's never really asked for help with any of his "problems", except this one.

Doing a Google search I saw where he switched from XP to Ubuntu in 2004, but posted only a couple msgs about it. There was a year of absense and then, in 2007, another posting on the Ubuntu forum. After that, nothing until he joined this forum in feb of 2009.

IF he is the same person who was in the protein folding project he is running Win7. If not ...

He doesn't have much of an Internet trail, either.

Thanks guys, I think I'll start ignoring posts from new people who come with a clear jerk attitude and omit simple words like "Please" and "Thank You".

            Cheers!

I ignore them, too. Especially if they are nasty in attitude. I know that most of the time that is just frustration acting, but that's no excuse, considering they are not paying for either the OS or the help. They usually don't appreciate any help you give and then blame you for any additional problems they cause by NOT following your directions.

I helped a relative of mine to switch from XP to Kubuntu a month ago. He lives in 1,700 mi away! We used Skype to communicate and when ever he got stuck I had him show me his screen. MOST of the time he was never where I asked him to go or where he said he was. Dialogs confused him. He couldn't retain "Left mouse is action, Right mouse is options" in mind. Using Skype and having him show me his screen I could direct his mouse and have him click where I wanted him to. I was also able to text sudo commands to him and have him copy and paste them into a Konsole. It makes supporting him a breeze!

Yeah, the don;t even want to know how much they'd have to pay for support

Also: I love all these threates: "if you don't help me I'm back to using Windows". Like _I_ care. My answer is a polite "please do whatever makes you happy". LOL.

Honestly, if the advice given doesn't help then I'd really want to know. I'm guilty of giving half-baked advice at times, but it hope do better in the future. I can't improve my help skllz if I don't get a fair chance from help requesters.

true geting help in a forum is a two sided endevor the poster neads to have the patence to make the problem obveus to the pepole reading it and respond to requests for more info and the pepole trying to help nead to try to make shure the OP understand's wat is requierd of them and how to proced.

                    LMAO

I do love it when I can help someone, but that's not my main reason for being here. I spend time on the forums to learn more about what is possible with Kubuntu and how to do it. Every help request I read has a chance to be a problem I may yet encounter myself. It may also be a problem I've already encountered and fixed.

So you are right, Vinny. Learning in this community is two way street. Sometimes we teach, sometimes we learn, but we all hope to become more proficient through the experience.
