Error at login

When the GUI finally loads I get an error message saying 'The proccess for the desktop protocol died unexpectedly' To get to this point after the 'Loading filed needed for bot etc... stage I have to enter username and password into a DOS style screen then type startx into the command line and then the load is very slow. Any Help would be appreciated

Hi. Can you give some more information please. Are you booting from a live CD, or are you installing from a CD to your hard disk?

Do you have a root prompt #, or do you have a user prompt $, ?

When you type your username and password are they accepted? Then what happens after you type startx?

Problems like this are most likely caused by your graphics card, either something in /etc/X11/xorg.conf the configuration file, or in the error log file in /etc/X11. Look there and if the log file exists it may give you a clue.

Try the log files in /var/log such as user.log, syslog and kern.log
