x server problems

    x server problems

    hi,
    i just finished upgrading to 9.04 and all hasn't been smooth ever since. There are some xserver problem i am facing regularly.
    When i try to play big video file (.mkv), it just logs me out and i go back to the login screen.
    While scrolling up and down on say kate or konqueror, the text get garbled. Only when i reload it, does the correct page reappear, but only to get garbled upon scrolling again.

    I have seen behavior like X dieing with an Nvidia graphics card and openGL not setup correctly. Run
    Code:
    glxinfo
    and see if you have DRI support.
    ~/flac $glxinfo
    name of display: :0.0
    display: :0 screen: 0
    direct rendering: Yes
    server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
    server glx version string: 1.4
    If not, install the proprietary drivers. I suspect something similar might happen with other display adapters also.

      i think i have DRI support. well, i am still a newbie with linux, so not sure i understand everything.

        I wish I understood it better also, but it does show that you have DRI support and openGL 1.2. I am not sure of the differences between 1.2 and 1.4 so I have not idea if that is affecting you.

        It is likely that this is related to your video adapter and X configuration. Look in /var/log/syslog after x closes and see if it gives you any info. You should also look in ~/.xsession-errors.
