Attempted upgrade to 9.04

I have attempted to upgrade to 9.04 and would like KDE3.5. At this point I have kernel 2.6.24.23-generic x86_64 with kde4? running barely. I cannot connect to internet to update, upgrade or repair and can find no network settings or programs in menu. I'm not sure where to go from here. 9.04 and 8.10 are supposed to be installed but don't show in grub. I have a 9.04/kde3 disk, should I just reinstall form scratch? Is it possible to save the setting and documents I currently have --or-- is all lost?? I could really use and I really appreciate any and all input on this situation.

HOW did you upgrade and FROM what?

were you in anuther ver. and distro upgrade with kpackegkit .........install over with cd .......new partition.....?....how.

sounds like grub may have goten over riten if you had both 8.10 and 9.04 befor and now thar gone

but thats fixable if that's the case..............a littel more info please

Thanks for the quick reply. It was an automatic upgrade through Adept, there were two upgrades as far as I can tell-- from 8.04 to 8.10 then to 9.04. The command "lsb_release -a" shows ver 9.04. All the upgrades have been onlilne via Adept as suggested by update notifier. Neither one of these ver show up in menu.lst. Don't know if this helps I will try and provide more info if you can tell me what you need or how to get it. Thank You again

allright I'm confused...you sead you had upgrades thrugh Adept so that would be on the runing system and you would now have 9.04.........not 8.04,8.10,and 9.04 ........unless you had one or more of them sepret on a dule boot sys.

so thare shouldent be a refrence in menu.lst unles it was allredey thare!

if you do have multipul install's look hear to fix grub

when my'n uped from 8.04 to9.04 it kept all my seting's like network with ndiswrapper and the sutch so not shur about that.

Sorry if I'm confusing you, I'll try again. Automatic update updated from 8.04 to 8.10, did not show up in boot loader only 8.04. Worked fine. then updated to 9.04 thru adept aand added kde4. now nothing works right, no internet, system settings starts in taskbar and can't open it on desktop, Firefox, adept and Synaptic don't work because no internet. I've been using Kubuntu for about a year and have some pics, docs and settings I'd like to use in 9.04 with KDE3+.. Hope this made more sense thanks again.

post your menu.lst and the ls of /boot.

im thinking if you'r menu.list dident get uped AND if its naming a kernell your not booting the newest on you'v got......I still have the old kernel and initrd and sysmap bla bla BUT my menu.lst point's to the genarickley named vmlinuz and initrd in / THAT DID update to point to the new kernel and initrd ...........O and my kernel is

2.6.28-11-generic but I'm not on a x86_64system.

Maybe I need to clear up one thing--I am not writing this from the bad machine this is another computer altogether. Just tried to boot the sick machine and I get an error msg something about not being able to start kde at all because of "No write access to /home/username/ICEauthority" error . so I'm using a live cd to access the files I'm enclosing.

well you do have a 2.6.28-11 kernel ...good ...but your totaley rediculess menu.list isent pointing to it
BUT that's totaly fixable......yay

first see if you have a system link in / cald vmlinuz that points to the new kernel(/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic)....and a the same for initrd.img pointing to (/boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-11-generic

if so adding somthig like

to your menu.list sould work

Can't find / cald vmlinuz directory. And I'm not sure where to look for system links? Also if initrd.img is a compressed file how can I read it?

sorey I get cared away............I have a system link in root .../....named vmlinuz....so it looks like a file named vmlinuz if you rite click it and clickon proprtys you'll see.....that points to /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic but you mite not have one .

eney way read the grub howto and fix grub to boot your newest kernel.

and go from there

Vinny is right about what you need to do. With the upgrade you got a new version of grub and the installer did a poor job of setting it up. This is fairly common with this upgrade. Run

sudo grub-install hd0

and then

sudo update-grub

After that you should have your 2.6.28-11 kernel in /boot/grub/menu.lst and the next reboot should run that kernel and that will help you a lot.

Here is the latest update. The grub install, update-grub in the last post did not work. I did find a link in /boot and edited it into menu.lst using vi from recovery mode. Currently I am able to boot into kernel 2.6.28-11....but kde will not load. I get a message that "No write access to /home/username/ICEauthority" error . and I wind up back at the login screen. I am able to log in at the console screen from there however. Thanks for all the info but I'm still not up and running totally. Any suggestions as to where to go from here? I actually am trying to use kde3+ instead of kde 4.

Use Ctl-Alt-F1 to get to a text terminal. Login and run

sudo rm .ICEauthority

Notice the . in front of the file name. That file stores X permissions and it should be owned by your user rather than root. It will get recreated when you login again, and you can probably avoid its ownership changing by using kdesudo instead of sudo when running KDE programs as root.

Finally!! Thanks to you guys I have it up and running or at least functioning. Still no internet. When I go to network settings KDE control mod says that "Your Platform is Not Supported", any ideas? Thanks again for all your great help.

Networking has been another real problem with this upgrade. What you should do depends on what hardware you have. Are you using wired ethernet or wireless or both?
