Intel 82845G/GL video and Kubuntu 9.04

Has anyone had success in installing or upgrading to Jaunty on a laptop with integrated Intel 82845G/GL video? I've tried half a dozen clean installs using both the Live and Alternate CDs and have had only partial success. Every time after tweaking I end up with a Jaunty desktop in shades of grey instead of blue, no panel, and no response to right click. I can open the Kubuntu menu by using Alt-F1, and access all applications that way, although they open in a very minimized form and have to be dragged to full-screen. Alt-F2 also opens the "Run" dialogue.

Yes, on a Dell Dimension 2350 which has that exact same GPU, I had great success with 9.04. The only problem is that the default screen is 1024x768 @85Hz, and it does not fill the 17" monitor. You can reset it via KMenu>System Settings>Display & Monitor to 1280 x 1024 @60Hz, but it will only hold for the current session -- next boot it is back to 1024 x 768. But I had no problems with colors or other display attributes -- GLX was enabled, but glxgears only gives 225 FPS so you can't really do anything -- Google Earth will crash X.

Make sure you burned your CD at 4x speed -- possibly it's defective.

CD burned at 4X as per advice you provided in response to a previous post. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled the KDE desktop. Still no panel. Very strange.

        Hmmmmmmmmmm.

        Couple of questions:

        1. Did you boot the Live CD, and play with it a little? Does it look right and act right? Audio? Browser?

        2. Is it possible that the screen display is actually larger than your monitor? In other words, maybe there's a panel, but it's 2 inches below the bottom of your monitor. Go in to System Settings > Display & Monitor, and try a smaller resolution, like 1024x768, or even 800x600, and see what you get.

I never had much luck in getting the LIve CD to work in any useful way. As for the imperfect installation that I have now with access to apps only possible by alt-F1, everything I have tried seems to work, including e-mail, browser, sound.

When I go System Settings-Display-Size & Orientation ,VGA and LSVD are listed but all options are greyed out. I cannot see what settings are used, or change any of them. I have forced the screen resolution to 800X600 by editing the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst and achieved what appeared to be a 800 X 600 screen, albeit positioned in the upper left, with no panel. When I do the same for 1024X768 I get what appears to be my normal screen with no panel.
