    KDE4 install failed

    I installed Intrepid back in January, could not stand the KDE4.2 beta, installed the KDE3.5.10 from pearsoncomputing and used it happily for a while. I upgraded to Jaunty last week and it continued running KDE3. I seem to be missing out on some of the newest packages, so I decided to give KDE4 a try again.

    I tried installing kde (apt-get install kubuntu-desktop) and rebooted.

    For one thing, it does not go into kdm automatically. I have to log in as root and run kdm manually.

    But the main problem is I log in and I get to the desktop and all I see is my mouse pointer and gkrellm (which is normal), otherwise a black screen. It does not respond to mouse buttons (no right-click menu). I have to hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete to log out. I can run Gnome or Xfce and can use it to install, but I want KDE.

    Does anyone know what I have to do to get the regular KDE4 back again? Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

    could you Please try #dpkg-reconfigure kdm (as root)

    also, what you get when you run after the terminal login $startx? (as user)

      This was suggested before and it has no effect.

      I don't quite get what you're asking. I rebooted, logged in as me.

      I type "$startx" and nothing is printed.

      I type "login $startx" and it says:
      No utmp entry. You must exec "login" from the lowest level "sh"

        Hi,

        just one question?

        Are you running jaunty?

        It looks like you have a broken setup somehow.

        You could try sudo dpkg-reconfigure -a

        it will take some time but will reconfigure your ubuntu.

        Maybe someone could help you better.

          Could you also check your /etc/apt/sources.list

                Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately after the dpkg-reconfigure, an hour of answering questions, all of them seeming benign, I rebooted to a hosed system. The KDM login screen had a frozen mouse pointer and did not respond to keys. I had to hit reset to reboot. At the console login, I had no network access at all. No eth0. When I enabled it by hand I still could not ping anything last the router. I did not see a manual repair of this situation to be very pretty.

                So I downloaded the Jaunty install disk, installed from scratch, and am now in KDE4 and reconfiguring my universe.

                Honestly, since there didn't seem to be any way to fix it, reinstalling from disk was going to be my next step anyway, so I'm not that disappointed about it.

                (I do have to admit that for the few days I used it, that Xfce was not too bad.)
