adept problem after upgrading to Jaunty

Try to run Adept then get this message:

It seems that the recovery has failed. Please fix manually (try dpkg --configure -a and/or apt-get -f install) in terminal...

Can't load further updates, thinks adept still running...have tried 'sudo --configure -a' with no luck

what to do now please?
