Good news, the ICEAuthority didn't delete the first time, the SU rm deleted it, and StartX started the XFCE graphical system. Upon reboot, it rebooted into KDE4.

Congratulations, petersk, now what exactly the problem was and the solution? I feel that deleting the .ICEAuthority file was only the last step and not the original problem in the first place.

Who knows? Frankly:
1) it's not the same hardware as at the start of the thread (I changed out the motherboard);
2) I've done quite a few apt-get removes and purges and reinstalls, not writing any down -- but the thread seems to capture it all;
3) it's still not quite right...

I will probably start a new thread for this, because it doesn't appear, despite this work, that the resolution is right (not 1280x1024), and when I set it to be something desirable (1280x1024), it doesn't "hold" after a reboot.

We don't exactly what happened, but we do know approximately what happened. The user used "sudo" while performing some operation in the user's home directory, which caused root privileges to be assigned to the .ICEauthority file. When the user subsequently (next login session) attempted to access his folder, he was denied by .ICEauthority, which said "root access only", and would not let the X server start.

The lesson learned, once again, is "Do not perform root operations, or use "sudo" commands on data in the user folder".
