can only login in default since upgrade

    Hi .
I upgraded today to jaunty from hardy and can now only log in using the default setting .
Im pretty new to kubuntu and have no idea what im meant to do now .
If i try to log in using kde on sessions the screen goes black then returns to the login screen again .

Im pretty useless so if anyone can offer nay help ( using the long slow talking to a complete novice approach ) i would be eternally grateful .

i have all my pics and photos on here and am worried all will be lost .

Is there a way someone can help me remotely ?

    Thanks in advance .

If any offers of help could be emailed to me inkedmink@btinternet.com .

    Thanks again
    Nancy

default can be any number of things but I am guessing it is the same as failsafe in your case? You get only a text terminal?

I am a little short on info about your situation but almost certainly you can fix it by running
    sudo aptitude update
and when that completes without errors, running
    sudo aptitude -f install kde
If "sudo aptitude update" does not complete without errors post the errors and the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list file here.

Re: can only login in default since upgrade

Looks like progress. You now have consistent sources and can update and it appears that kde is installed. You should run
            sudo aptitude -f full-upgrade
to make sure your system is totally up to date now. If that does not fix it see if kubuntu-desktop and kde-window-manager are installed
            dpkg -l | grep kubuntu-desktop
            dpkg -l | grep kde-window-manager
If either is missing install them.

              Hi .
It says they are installed yet i can only log into gnome .
If i try kde it just goes to black screen then back to log in .
Is it perhaps that i dont have a good enough graphics card ?

I just tried to do a fresh install with an iso but it does the exact same thing .

Im cheesed off with it and wish i hadnt pressed the UPGRADE button .

Thanks for your help tho .

Re: can only login in default since upgrade

As an old Debian user I am used to the rock solid apt and aptitude programs which are still available in Ubuntu and are much more reliable than any of the GUI package management tools.

I think it is likely your problem lies in ~/.kde. Possibly you enabled Desktop Effects or possibly a plasmoid that is giving you trouble. Depending on how attached you are to a particular configuration you can do something like, remove ~/.kde or move ~/.kde and when you login again it will create a new one. There might be things like address book or bookmarks in there.

You can also edit file in ~/.kde/share/config. IIRC the Desktop effects is in kdeglobals and the plasmoids in plasmarc. I know that you can find information on this by searching this forum for effects and plasma.

Is there a way i can get rid of kde and jaunty completely ?
Ive removed all my sentimental stuff .
Or will i have to go buy a new hard drive just to be shot of it .
I cant even get xp to install now ( not that i want it ) .

                  Thanks again

Re: can only login in default since upgrade

You can do anything you want to do. It is just a question of how much work it is and how to go about it. If you want to have Ubuntu rather than Kubuntu Jaunty you can install the ubuntu-desktop and uninstall KDE. If you want KDE 3.5 with Jaunty you can install that. If you really want to go back to Hardy or Intrepid you would need to reinstall from CD. I think that would be a mistake though. Eventually you will have to upgrade and Jaunty really is pretty stable. If you want XP that can be done also. Since you say you can't get XP to install it seems you will need to solve some problems in any case.
