    Power saving suggestions?

    Hi all,

I've got Jaunty running really nicely as a dual-boot on a Macbook Pro. Today I was in a meeting, making notes on the computer, and found the battery was draining pretty quickly. I can reckon on at least 3 hours on this computer running Mac OS, and 4 with wireless turned off. But running Kubuntu, even with the Powersaving scheme active and the screen at about half-brightness, my battery was down to 25% in under 2 hours (and this was just taking notes on Kate with little else running).

Does anyone have any suggestions for settings which would help me save power? For example, is it safe to use the ENABLE-LAPTOP-MODE in /etc/default/acpi-support ? (I did once use this setting on an Aspire One, and I think it helped)

Also, I've switched from Network Manager to Wicd. Under Network Manager I was able to switch wireless off with the checkbox: is there a way to turn wireless networking off (completely off, so I save battery) any other way?

    Thanks in advance, Kubuntu geniuses!

Nope, no switch. It's all controlled in OS X.

That's right: Apple like to do everything from software and have as few lights and switches as possible on their hardware.

So any thoughts on powersaving? Also, might "sudo ifconfig wlan0 down" turn off the wifi or does that just disconnect it?

        Re: Power saving suggestions?

I'm very interested in this as I'm using my notebook, a HP Compaq nc6400, bought in 2006 June, in a place with very little or limited power.

When new, before I had installed Ubuntu 6.06, Windows XP would last for up to eight hours with the standard and travel batteries. With Ubuntu it was much less. Now, I'm only running Kubuntu and the battery life in somewhere between one and one point five hours. I have no intention of putting XP or Vista on the machine to see how it compares but I've read others who report similar worse power consumption.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm sure that many people would be interested.

I'm still downloading Jaunty for a dual boot with Intrepid until I switch over to Jaunty, so I will compare the two and see if there is any improvement from 8.10 to 9.04

Any one else noticed any difference in power consumption or battery life?
