kubuntu 9.04 final release upgrade stopped upgrading my 8.10!

    Hi,

This happens every time I start the upgrade process. It stops after step 3 of this guide https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ja...grades/Kubuntu.
After I enter the password the windows disappears there is no more activity. More over, I can start adept and fetch packages (from sources of version 9.04)

The first time I started the upgrade with the command "update-notifier-kde -u" as described in step 1. The upgrade process went through all steps, but some strange happened at step 6) it found only one new package of 197k, after downloading and installing the package, it asked for remove obsolete packages (8 packages), I accepted and then I restarted. But adept notifier is still saying that there is a new release available.

I am avoiding to do a fresh install. What can I do so it can continue the upgrading?
    Thanks,
    Jorge

Open a terminal and look at /etc/apt/sources.list. All the links there should refer to jaunty rather than intrepid. If they don't, change them to jaunty. If you have files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d either update them to jaunty or remove them. Medibuntu youcan update to jaunty. Other I would remove.

    Then run
    sudo aptitude update
and after that completes without errors run
    sudo aptitude -f full-upgrade

I have found this in /var/log/auth.log

      Apr 23 21:24:12 lupa sudo: pam_unix(sudo:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=0 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user=jorge

Apr 23 21:30:03 lupa CRON[6716]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root
      Apr 23 21:35:04 lupa sudo: jorge : TTY=unknown ; PWD=/tmp/tmp-tYJUn ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/tmp/tmp-tYJUn/jaunty --frontend=DistUpgradeViewKDE

Apr 23 21:39:01 lupa CRON[7186]: pam_unix(cron:session): session closed for user root
      Apr 23 21:39:04 lupa sudo: jorge : TTY=unknown ; PWD=/home/jorge/Documents ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/ksystemlog -icon ksystemlog -caption KSystemLog

Is the process ended abruptly because the session of root was closed unexpectedly?

I think that first line just indicates that either you typed the password wrong or you really don't have sudo.

It looks like the downloading of a new sources.list worked so now run update and upgrade commands.

I tried this (not executed anything else because it is too late, I will continue tomorrow) Please give me your opinion to what is the bes way, because there are different packages affected between one option and the other. I must confess that I never used aptitude before.

              sudo apt-get update
              sudo apt-get -f dist-upgrade

              This is the result:

1003 upgraded, 101 newly installed, 5 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 974MB of archives.
After this operation, 585MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? n

and with aptitude as you suggested:

              sudo aptitude update
              sudo aptitude -f full-upgrade

              This is the result:
982 packages upgraded, 100 newly installed, 43 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 931MB of archives. After unpacking 429MB will be used.

              why the difference?

finally I chose aptitude, it is running right now but I believe there will be problems:

Keep trying. The servers were very busy yesterday. You should run aptitude update each day before you try again because changes may have been made overnight. Actually, Ubuntu seems to change during the day also.

The difference is that aptitude is smart enough to remove packages that were installed to satisfy a dependency and are no longer needed.

My thought on this is that in doing an upgrade by download only, you run the risk of having nowhere to go. If something goes wrong, and in the unlikely event that your system becomes unbootable as a result, you have a huge problem.

It is clear you are having issues with this. My thoughts are that you may well be best downloading the CD and then using that as an upgrade source - if it goes wrong at least you have the means of doing a reinstall

There is certainly nothing wrong with having a backup plan, but APT is a very good tool and it will not install unless it has all it needs to put things in a good state. I would not spend time worrying about aptitude that way. The python scripts that ubuntu uses in addition to apt I am not so sure about, but those are no longer being used in this operation after they failed the first time.

Excuse my paranoia but as an Insolvency Practitioner I tend to live by the motto "if it can go wrong......"

well, I downloaded and tried to make a cdromupgrade without the network, but once again I faced with another problem. It says something about the unauthenticated packages. I don't know what to do, it does not offer a solution or a tip. See the screenshot image, please.
