    SOLVED - Blocked updates revisited

For some time now, the blocked updates consists of linux kernel, flash and a couple of other things. Is there a way to resolve the problems and get it installed?

BTW - I am talking about a recommended way of resolving it, not forcing it via a hack or something like that. I want to stay with the recommendations of the devs and package maintainers.

I have not had a blocked package for at least a week, probably 2. Is your apt system updating?

I think so. But I am doing an apt-get update now to check. Will let you know what happens.

Maybe there is a problem in the Brazilian mirror? Should I change to another mirror?

Try removing and reinstalling the package. Worked for me with Flash.

It does look like a problem with the mirror, but often such things are very temporary, possibly based on the traffic at the moment. I think I would comment the ppa line so you do not have to contend with it until you get the basic system updating. Then I would try to update a few more times to see if it works. Knowledge of use patterns for the network or server might be useful here.

              ppa line?

Tried a Google on it and got something about hindu business etc :-)

What is it and what do I do?

In the errors among the failed to retrieve was

W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY A47958D42B7E03A7

You have an entry in your sources (either /etc/apt/sources.list or /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xxx) that refers to http://ppa.launchpad.net jaunty and you do not have the GPG key installed for it. You should comment it in the file or you can probably disable it in Kpackagekit, or whatever you use.

                  Re: Blocked updates revisited

Ok. I have changed to the main source instead of the Brazilian and the problems are gone except for the one that do not have a GPG key. I do not know how to set that in the file (could not find anywhere to set it in KpackageKit - maybe they should add an option when you edit sources there), but as long as it do not make any trouble, I do not mind the error message.

But I still have these packages that are held back. It is the same ones in both KpackageKit and apt-get. At least they agree on this :-)

Also, while I am at it - do I have to do anything special to upgrade to the RC version, or is it enough just to follow all the updates? Is there a way to clean out the files that do not belong there anymore?

                    Re: Blocked updates revisited

Seems like this is a bug:

                    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/ja...it/+bug/343124

Some people say that it is possible to use Synaptic to fix it (if I install Synaptic, will it conflict with something else? Will it require a ton of other things?) or you can do a dist-upgrade or something like that.

So first of all - what is a dist-upgrade?

Edit: Finally managed to find something on my own

I am doing a dist upgrade now using

                    Code:
                    sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade
and it seems to take care of all the held back packages. Easy enough when you know what to look for. This is always the problem when there is something you do not know. You even do not know what to ask for...

Done. And nothing more to upgrade No held back. So the solution is simply to do a dist-upgrade.

Re: SOLVED - Blocked updates revisited

If it's an upstream glitch, see above.

If a package was set to "hold," use aptitude or dselect. Use / to search for the package name, which will show something like "hi" or "=i" at the left of the screen, rather than "ii". use "+" to set it to regular install and update.

If you're caught in the must-but-can't-reinstall dance, you may have no choice but to play with fire.

                        dpkg -r --force-remove-reinstreq packagename

is supposed to remove such packages, and usually does.

When that fails, edit /var/lib/dpkg/status and change the package status to "uninstalled"--after which, it's probably a good idea to install, uninstall, reinstall (assuming that .deb is available--sometimes, it's being missing is tied into this problem).

hawk, who learned this stuff running debian "unstable" before "testing" was created [and who just dated himself]
Noone else may have these opinions without paying my retainer

This computer was for some 10 days used without internet access and there were 70 updates of which 4 were 'held back'.
Only after using Adept I could actually update them.
