    Processor not recognized properly????

    Updated laptop that is listed in Sig. All seems well but have noted two things. Graphics seem a little slower to respond, which I think should improve by release, I hope . I also noticed that my processor seems sluggish as well. It reports fine, but doesn't seem fine. When I went to change the "performance" to Performance I noted that my processor no longer is being reported as Speed Scalable. I know that it is because I've been making sure it has always been at full speed when on power for quite a long time. Has anyone else seen this? Is this a kernel issue or Kubuntu? Any feed back would be appreciated.

    I've got a Dell 630m laptop with the same graphics card, the intel 915, which I have always seen as the machine's weak-spot especially with 8.10 (since the change in Xorg I suspect).

    Apart from slowing down a bit, does the card work better generally i.e lack of flicker etc? I'd be very interested to know what your GLX Gears score is. If all is well I might dip the toe in the water.

      As far as glxgears, everything seems normal there. I average 148 to 151 fps when on initial window size. If I enlarge the window, yes it goes down, but I expect that, and even then it is a good 60 fps. All in all very good. The issue is more when I have Desktop effects on. I have minor decoration corruption (nothing major, but noticeable) and when you move a window, that is where the slow down is seen. Transparency happens slower and Wobbly Windows isn't so wobbly. Under 8.10/KDE4.2 that wasn't the case. The CPU issue still has me perplexed.

        Interesting

        I grumbled with 8.10 when I got 220FPS with GLX gears. With a reinstall I got up to 780-800. Won't wear Desktop effects at all.

        Worth a go though I think. I also seem to have the same CPU as you so I'll let uoi know how I get on with it.

          Yeah, with 8.10 things seemed quicker and DeskTop Effects work really well. I actually got 9.04 to crash several times today. Interesting enough, Kubuntu had some kind of recovery system in place and it was able to go into some other mode and let me find out what happened. Again, the crash was video related and from what I could tell, it seems that the X system is their latest, so my problems may be related to that. What is further Interesting I have not had this issue on another system, but it had nVidia. So it seems that X still has issues with Intel's Graphics cards of this type. Of course this is all in theory.

            Let me clarify the CPU issue.... Frequency Scaling is now being reported as not a feature of my CPU. I know it is, so what in the world? what do I do? That may be some of my other issues as the CPU really doesn't seem to be operating @ full even though it reports it is. I've used this system a long time and know.

            Update after system crash while writing the above. Full reinstall with the Alpha 6 CD. All is normal again. Running beautifully. Yea!!!! Recommend a full reinstall from 8.10. Backup data before you do!

              When you say "CPU is no longer being reported" do you mean in some GUI tool or in the kernel? When you run "cat /proc/cpuinfo" do the correct flags and info show up?

              If so then your problem lies in the GUI. If not you need to get the kernel to recognize it properly, possibly by loading a module.

                Actually after the Full Reinstall that problem doesn't exist any more. Had to be a conflict in a file somewhere after the update from 8.10. Thanks any way. Now I'm in the process of re-installing all that I had originally.

                  I got the alternate CD and used it as an update source. Everything went according to plan. Kudos to the devs.

                  According to GLX gears, my intel 915 is working much better than before - 1200fps! Also, I haven't yet noticed any artefacts left on the screen when I close (say) Firefox that I used to get with intrepid. Still flickers when I start wine though.

                  On the CPU front I was a bit worried at first. On the first post-upgrade run kded4 was shown to be taking up 98% of processor time. Following a reboot that sorted itself out.

                  Only a couple of niggles - I get an error message on wake-up from hibernation though it still works and an error message on shutdown about IDE (can't remember the wording). There is only one irritation (guess what- wireless ) about which I've posted elsewhere. Otherwise so far so good.

                    With compositing off I get 1058 FPS. Still good to me. With compositing on I still get some windows decoration corruption that I didn't get under 8.10. However, I did find out that one of the effects that I really was using compositing for is now a function without it on (Log On/Log Off effects). Due to that, I will leave compositing off. So far so good. Everything is really fast and beautiful. Wireless was actually working for me. Again, I say kudos to the Devs as this, even with the few noticed problems (this is a beta after all), is the best I've seen Kubuntu!
